Since the podcasts I think he acts it up a little because he knows he can make Ricky laugh... the true KP is the really early radio shows I think; with the horse in the house stories etc.
I don't see the Karl from the podcasts as that different from the radio show. Same daftness, and child-like logic. Ive listened to KP since back in the XFM days about 10 years ago. He is an utter genius in his own special way. I was listening to an old podcast today actually. An extract from his diary;
'Read about this pub where they have stopped a horse going in. It's been the horse's local for ages but they have new owners who say 'we're serving fresh food now and don't want a horse in here anymore'

What it is then is the way that in the podcasts everything is a loaded question where Ricky knows what kind of reaction Karl will give. In the very early XFM shows, Ricky and Steve simply had no idea what was going to be said, that's what made it so funny!I have just watched the last episode and thought it the best of the series. But I think it would have been a safer bet for Ricky Gervais had he cast someone else in the lead. The standard of writing and acting was superb, but his reputation is such that most people will consider it a big piss take, sadly.
Having said that, I personally really enjoyed his performance because it's clear it is no piss take and he is a fine actor.
I went to see Rainman expecting never to believe that 'Benjamin Braddock' from The Graduate could ever morph into a realistic Autistic Savant. But he did and I did.
So bravo Ricky!

I dont think any (many?) people think its a piss take as such...at least, not at the expense of "dereks" - He has seen how people got all gushy over his last episode of Extras and has done one of two things.....pushed it to the limit to see what he can get away with...or pushed it to the limit because he really believes his own hype.Given the "emotion by numbers" approach, I'd hope its the former!
