Can't wait. Derek passed me by when it was on but I got the series on DVD for Xmas. Thought it was superb.
I know many people don't live Gervais but I fail to understand how anyone can say he can't act. The scene in Extras Christmas special towards the end of his stay in the big brother house when he starts to fall apart and does his monologue to camera hoping Maggie will be watching was just superb. Anyone who thinks he can't act should really watch it.
In fact, I would say that the Extras Xmas special was possibly the single best bit of tv I've seen in many years. A real damning indictment of reality tv and c-list celebrity culture. Hilariously funny and painfully sad at the same time. Just brilliant television.

I'm looking forward to the new series with a sense of trepidation. One series might have been enough. There's a risk that it becomes diluted, formulaic, etc
I think that is a good critique.Office/Extras both stopped when they were ahead, but Derek has a different feel to it. We shall see.

Looking forward to this, took me a while to get 'into' the previous series but the characters are excellent, the care worker lady (Hannah) - hard but soft too, Karl Pilkington's character, the tinnie man got stronger as a character as Series 1 went on.
Hopefully Series 2 will continue to be well-written and well-acted.

Mediocre. If ever there was a story that didn't need a second series, it's Derek. It's a vanity project for Gervais - and he's really not talented enough an actor to pull off playing the lead.
I slowly warmed to it as the first series progressed. Not up there with the Office and some of Extras, but it became more watchable. I struggled to find any redeeming quality in last night's episode TBH - so much so that I missed the last few minutes because I fell asleep!
Let it go, Ricky....

Somehow Derek seems, to me anyway, less 'Derek' than he was before, he seems to have lost some of the innocence/naivety he had in the 1st series. Derek in the 1st series would never have said the bit about Hannah and her boyfriend going off to have sex, I feel Derek wouldn't really have had a grasp of what sex was.
Also, although it has yet to be seen whether Karl's character has really gone, I liked that character and can't see why he would be written out of this series in episode 1.

I'm sure I read somewhere it was because Karl hated acting and he has really gone. Also, although it has yet to be seen whether Karl's character has really gone, I liked that character and can't see why he would be written out of this series in episode 1.

I thought last night wasn't quite right in the comedy/ heart strings ratio, but I will persevere.
I enjoyed it. The second series of The Office was on par with the first - I think / hope that Derek will be the same.
Although... Tin-Can-Man... Would he really be there?! Yes, towards the end of series one he did develop, but last night he just didnt seem needed (albeit he is now obviously stepping into Karl's shoes)

Can't abide Gervais. tt of the highest order.
However, i quite like this. It's very real. (wife manages a care home).
I can watch it without wanting to punch him, which is amazing.
Has the right mix of comedy and emotion.
Can't believe i am typing this about a complete knobber but it is rather good.
Detested the office. Would still happily cross a busy road to punch him.... (other than this).

Interesting that people who don't normally like Gervais like this. I loved the Office and Extras, but this seems a lot weaker.
All the heartstrings stuff feels contrived and there isn't enough humour. If Karl isn't in it now, that is the only amusing character gone. The alcoholic guy is just crude.
