Why does it HAVE to be funny just because RG is involved? He doesn't have to be funny in everything he is in.
EXACTLY. I don't believe this was ment to be a laugh out loud comedy. Maybe a different genre all toghether. If you watch it thinking 'this is should be a laugh' your missing the point of it. Got it on now. Really quite depressing and the Missus has just said "not up to much, still want to watch it?" which I didn't and neither did she.
It's probably a very realistic reflection on some people's lives as has already been said. More so than we may think if not exposed to it.

This showed:
Gervais can write superb parts for 30 something women who live alone and want a man.
Gervais has a genuine affection for the elderly/family.
Gervais is FAR too keen to insert (his word) "mongs" into his creations in a bid to defend his "I'm not being nasty about people with disabilities, just people that are mongs" - he's even said that derek is NOT supposed to have an medical issues at all.
He may as well do black jokes about a guy with a monster tan and say "it's ok, cause he's not actually black"
T
It also showed that Kirk Lazarus's theory doesnt always work.

I like the fact that Gervais puts characters with disabilities into his shows. Comes from his collaboration with Ash Attalla. The characters have a disabilities but they don't define what the characters are to the show, unlike some other weaker shows which might use the disability as the character.
Anyone watching 'Derek' with the expectation of it making them laugh is missing the point entirely. It isn't meant to be a comedy. I think what Gervais has done is a stroke of genius, he's created a story line that cuts deep to real life. As a piece of television it's brilliant IMHO. I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea however.

That was me then. Didn't even realise this was a second series. Watched it with an open mind, although the paper review urged caution with regard to comedy. It was, and is, listed as 'comedy' drama, so was expecting to maybe have a chuckle... but no, not the hint of a titter.I liked the office, the sub plot romance, laughing at the character's delusions of superiority etc. Liked some of Extras too. But it seems we are being asked to laugh at people with disability with RG? I liked Warwick Davis's self effacing character in Life's to short. I don't have an issue with people finding humour with their own limitations, and get that.
But now we are being asked to find humour in what? People with sexual one track minds, people with strange balding patterns, people with 'learning difficulties'? If someone wants to make a show highlighting these issues, then fine, but in real life they are nothing much to laugh about.
So I don't get it. What next? Dying of cancer, laughing with Spina bifida? I like black humour, but there is something uncomfortable about the characters in this, I'm not laughing with them and feel no need at all to laugh at them... so wonder what the point is?
