Well, I quite like going to the cinema. Although it has to be said, I only ever go to see kids' films! We normally go for the pre-lunchtime showing of anything we want to see. The way the seats are arranged at the Vue cinema in Reading, coupled with the fact that those showings rarely have lots of people at them, means that I can usually block out any interruptions from people needing the loo halfway through. (Though I'll never understand why people want to bring newborns to see a film...)

The only films that I'd probably prefer to see at home are the ones that appeal to teenagers as well. They're much more likely to be disruptive and talk throughout the film than anyone else. The little kids are better behaved!

So essentially, I like the cinema as long as it's a good film. If the film is rubbish (Barnyard, I'm looking at you!) I can't just switch it off and send it back to Lovefilm - I have to stay to the end otherwise I feel it's a waste of money.

The last film I saw at the pictures was "Sum Of All Fears" (2002).

Since then (and I can't believe it's ten years ago, but for different reasons) I have forked out a pretty penny on a half-decent home cinema set up in order to enjoy the latest releases (and, let's face it, you only have to wait a few months) in the comfort of my own home - where I can smoke, eat, drink to my heart's content without "interaction" with the great unwashed and their nattering.

I do the exact same as you, order online, me amd the gf are students for the night, also online is cheaper.
Almost the same as me except if one cannot be bothered to order online you can just pres student ticket at the self service machine smile.
Student days were a long time ago!

It used to be that you could use the ticket machines for the student option, however suffice to say people were abusing this. As such, you need to pay at the counter with presentation of valid NUS card to claim student discount. My student card expired in 2008.

FWIW, I watched Titanic 3D. Gf's request though I do think it's actually quite a decent film.

Cinema was the Odeon in Camden Town. I won't be going back in a hurry.

Used to spend a fortune at our cinema, 3 kids, all close together age wise. They're teenagers now so they go with friends, but when they were little the number of utterly ste films I had to endure because it was the latest must see movie, christ I should've bought shares in Pixar or Disney. It got so bad I would pay them in and go for a walk for an hour and meet them at the end (didn't tell the missus)Then when I asked the kids if they'd enjoyed it they'd just say " yeah, not bad" not bad, I've just spent about 1/2 a day's wages. Last film was The Iron Lady 'coz the wife fancied it, again, waste of 30 quid.

So it's back open as a cinema then? Went to some pretty heavy-duty raves there in the mid-90s when it closed down as a cinema and was just a vacant building. Very heavy duty, bordering on the terrifying. hehe

only amateurs pay for food and drink in cinemas, I thought everyone knew that! Bottle of coke and a bag of Haribo for £2 in a any tesco.

I agree regarding the ticket prices, I am going to be trying to use my student card forever!

i watch all my films on my projector (1080p) and surround sound whilst recumbent on leather recliners - well worth the sacrifice of a spare bedroom. I went to the cinema a while back as a one off and was shocked at the poor quality of the screen and the general experience was as described by others - Horrid.

I would simply not entertain hanging round with the plebs again, eurgh....

I noticed this on recent DVD's. REALLY REALLY annoying. Plus why warn me? I've BOUGHT THE fkING THING.
It seems to be worse on a few I've seen recently, although primarily DVDs for the kids.

So I've just paid through the nose for this DVD. You then proceed to give me half an hour of adverts pushing other Disney stuff down our throats. All my son wanted was to watch Cars.

So, just as per the image - this is why, despite owning the DVDs, I've got the PS3 loaded up with 720p MP4 versions. Start up PS3. Click play on whichever one - done.

£2.50 per ticket at my local cinema, £3.50 at weekends. Still don't go as much as I like because of the yoofs talking all the time. My projector screen at home is bigger too, I can pause what I'm watching when I need a leak, and the company is far nicer too!
How big is your screen then???
I just measured the image, and its 220cm from corner to corner, so about the same as a 88inch TV? I obviously sit a lot closer to it than I do the screen at the cinema though biggrin

Not been to a multiplex Odeon/Vue type cinema in years to avoid the exact experience of the OP.

Used to be a member of the BFI on the South Bank in London and it was SO GOOD. interviews and Q&A sessions with writers/directors/editors of certain films prior to screening, "seasons" highlighting certain film genres or directors, and best of all RESPECT for the film and the viewers by everyone.

I've been to the IMAX just round the corner too, I actually found it quite a good place to watch the blockbuster Hollywood guff. Some of their "all nighter" screenings of LOTR or Star Wars would be fun to go see. But, there's plenty of small indy cinemas in London that mean you can avoid the Odeon crowd completely without much effort.

I think you might be thinking of Camden Palace (now Koko) at the end of Bayham Street which continues to be music/clubbing venue. Haven't been there since the uni days (brilliant times though...from what I can remember). The Odeon in question is on Parkway and to my knowledge has always been a cinema.

Wish that was possible.

Tried that the scandalously priced Eden Project last year and got pulled up on the fact that it expired in 2008...I made some excuses about not bringing the new one.

No, it was the cinema in Parkway. As I said, it stopped being a cinema was empty for a while and there were various squat parties there, not an official venue in the slightest.

I remember one time sitting in the stalls with my girlfriend listening to some trippy Hawkwind stuff, then downstairs there was one packed room with a constant stobe going and no other lighting with serious banging London acid techno playing. cool

Dogs on strings there too.

This was early 1995.
