The steel frame and cladding doesn't help, I suspect. Also some of my machines produce a certain amount of short range interference (which can affect the DAB too, sometimes).

There is some good stuff on R4 if you can sit and listen to it. Trouble is, you need to wade through hours of twee middle class s te to get to it. The stupid, jaunty hatty music on the comedy programmes make me retch.

One thing I do enjoy on R4 are the plays/drama. For some reason I've always enjoyed drama on the radio - it just seems to work so much better than on TV, I suppose because you have to make more use of your imagination. I'm a huge fan to. I find the medium of radio so much more imaginative than TV. When you take away the visual cues the mind just runs riot to fill in the spaces. It's the same if you put your favourite movie on and then turn the picture off. Do it with a movie with decent dialogue of soundtracks and it's an absolutle revelation.

It's why the Hitchhiker radio series was far better than the TV series or film.

Test.
Match.
Special.
Compulsive listening, and I hate cricket. You really should try the other TMS, Test Match Sofa, for the next Test, available online.

To be fair, I also hate some of the afternoon plays they put on. They can be rather fixated on middle class, arty farty, deep emotional stuff. How about a good story once in a while ?
Equally, they do also serialise some cracking books, LOTR and the hobbit for instance. I simply can't wait till my kids are old enough to listen to those with me.

Nobody has mentioned "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" yet? Some of that is great. We even have a Mornington Crescent thread on here somewhere.

Yes - a real gem and consistently funny for decades.
I'm not a huge fan of the plays either but occasionally they do have some very interesting ones. A year or so ago they had a dramatised version of Neville Shute's 1940s aircraft accident investigation story, "No Highway", for instance. They also had a drama documentary on teh cancellation of the TSR2.
What chances ANYTHING of that nature turning up on TV.

The Radio 4 Friday Night Comedy podcast is listened to multiple times a week in our house It led us on to buying lots of old series of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue and Just A Minute on audiobook :-)

Was converted to 4 when I started commuting long distance about 15 years ago and I love the comedy at 6.30pm.
The one presenter on the Today programme I cannot stand is Justin Webb. His questions just go on and on and on and on until there's little time for the interviewee to answer.
Can we please replace Webb with Eddie Maher (sp?) as long as he still can do PM as well. Pllleeeeaaassse?

It was interesting to see that it was reported in a couple of the papers as being a "proper" on air spat but I still think it was mischief-making on the part of Mr Mair.

Plus the sort of banter that happens with the likes of Tim Harford and Nils Blythe (Upshares/Downshares now BoE PR guy).... The man has timing as good as most comedians/comics!
