How do you know that the Scandinavians aren't too?
Not to us.

Plus the Nordic TV stations don't mix soap with serious, we do an the programmes are impoverished as a result.

Well, if you watched closely, you would have seen Vagn Skaerbek in the Bridge as well as Lennart Brix & one of the actors from the Killing was in Borgen too. So it goes around, but the point about the quality of the drama is spot on. I don't bother with British drama much anymore. The last decenty thng I recall was House of cards. hehe

Indeed. Several actors from The Killing (I & II) turned up in Borgen.

I was not aware that you consider any of the above soaps...

Ok, now i fully realise that it's a TV drama, so suspending one's sense of disbelief is a necessary prerequisit, and that people who say "why didn't they just do so-and-so" are rather missing the point, but, regarding the ending:

Surely, there is no law in the world that could justify the shooting of an innocent and unarmed civilian, regardless of the circumstance?

I mean, if we ignore the fact that the officer would have immediately been taken off the case when he was found to be personally involved, he still would have been completely within the normal course of law to simply shoot the killer, who was at that time threatening his and the civilians life directly?

Yes, but at that time he didn't know where his son was, so shooting the killer would have been counter productive.

^^That. Plus you have to suspend your disbelief repeatedly. It's easy to pick holes all the way along. The one that tickled me most was the pics of suspect cops plastered on the glass wall of the police station with coppers coming & going left right & centre.

For me, the win in this run of skandyhooly drama is in the noir feel, the exquisite characterisation - particularly in the first season of The Killing & particularly in the study of grief & it's corrosive effects and the twisty plots.

It would miss the thrust to me to look at it & declare it unrealistic.

I've been enjoying Homeland & The Bridge.

I said to my wife that we shouldn't know anything the detective doesn't know (this spoiled Homeland a bit), but it's what kept The Bridge so good.

The Bridge was brilliant and although the clues were there, nothing was confirmed until Saga and Martin knew (or suspected) it. The exception was where Sebastien was moving Mette around to.

There were problems such as why was Martin kept on the case, but a bit of suspended belief is always needed.

When August was in the coffin he was lying down, but the coffin in the wall was vertical. I'm assuming they found August in the wall coffin, and that he was found (unlike Jens' son).

Looking forward to The Bridge 2.

She may have been Jewish, some Jewish women cover their hair with wigs.

Also possibly something to do with his previous wife and daughter, who were blonde, or maybe she just liked wigs.

Church scene throws me off the Jewish angle, keeping it in the family and all, but fair enough. One of those points I was left thinking, wah?

That struck me as a non-denominational memorial venue of some sort.

Now you mention it Dave, I think you're right. Well, here's to the next Scandy import. Must be about time for the killing III?

Just finished watching this in DVD, excellent series. Found saga a little difficult to get my head round. Glad to hear series 2 is broadcast in Scandinavia this Autumn, not sure when we are getting it though. There is to be a US/Mexico and UK/French remake. UK remake is to be shown on Atlantic.

Season 1 was excellent, just noticed Season 2 has popped up on iPlayer. Didn't know BBC where showing it, 2 episodes already and looks just as good as the last one - excellent.

One of the highlights of the programme for me is Martin's bemused yet indulgent laughter when Saga says something odd. It's just perfect.

Love the theme music too.
