Indeed but there was a previous wife who was referred to frequently early in the series.

That was niggling me too, however, from this reference, it would appear not.

Mrs Columbo never appeared.

You seem to have forgotten the creator of the well used (around here anyway) acronym, She Who Must Be Obeyed.

JC's wife was in his Speed program briefly.

You never saw Maris, Niles' wife in Frasier. There's a word/phrase/name for this, isn't there? I can't remember what it is though.

It's similar to a MacGuffin, but I think they are just called "Ghosts" or something similar?

Doesn't the Major in Fawlty Towers refer to his wife a few times? Or is it always in the past tense?

Also Mrs Daley in Minder. Doh!

Norm's wife was sort of seen at the very end - she got a flan in the face.

Actually, I was remembering a scene from Dad's Army where Mr Mainwaring and his wife were in their bomb shelter on bunk beds.

He was on the lower one and you could see the upper one sagging through the, implied, weight of Mrs Mainwaring. Though the viewer never actually saw her; her "shape" was apparent, as it were.

Cheers,

Eric smile
By coincidence, this was the episode they showed last night. You still didn't get to see Mrs Mainwaring.

There was also the episode where she gets to play Lady Godiva in a local parade - which causes Mainwaring to faint - but you still don't get to see her.

Apparently there was staring captain janewaysmile

stupid idea.

but does that count as seeing the wife.

in one episode columbo gets an autograpgh for the wife. the person asks for a first name he says "mrs" smile

we should never have found out her name just like we never see his (brief glimpse of an id card excepted)
