Nuff said That's unpleasant, not scary. Domestic violence and child abuse isn't really what we were after.

Audition. No supernatural or the like but, there is a couple of scenes that are so subtle but, make most people jump.
Showed my GF the new Prometheus trailer last week. She watched most of it through her fingers. I think it was that classic Alien alarm sound that did it.

Bit of an update:
We watched Event Horizon which was good, and jumpy in a few places. We are finding that jumps and loud noises are what gets her.
Then we watched Martyrs, a french film. Christ, the guy that made that has some issues. I can't recommend it as it was downright unpleasant and not scary at all. If young women, defenceless being starved and beaten is your thing, then feel free to watch it, but I would say not to do so with your girlfriend. The overall premise was not good enough to justify the content either.
Next......The Grudge I think.....

That looked like it would have a few jumpy moments in it. That's just a Hollywood remake of REC. The original is much better, dispite requiring subtitles.

I wouldn't call that 'horror' at all; I'd call it 'Torture Porn', made just to see if the audience can stomach mindless violence – watching mindless violence and trying to outdo (viscerally speaking) the other crop of torture porn films isn’t my idea of horror. They just remind me of those god-awful fake 'snuff' movies from the early '80's. The Grudge isn’t too bad at all – some slate it, but I think it’s pretty effective at what it does. The Ring is also quite good.

I wouldnt say its a horror movie either, watched it last night after the mention on here and TBH its not something I'd show the missus, or even admit I went looking for it lol. Gonna try out Frontier(s) tonight, has a wrong-turn twist to it from reading the reviews. Does anyone else check out the plot on wikipedia before viewing?

Was going to suggest Event Horizon but it's bindun, scared the bejesus out of me!
To be fair, I must have been about 9 or 10 when I watched (half of) it. Part of me wants to watch it again and find out how it ends, at the same time it's the only film that's scared me sh*tless and if I watch it now will that be ruined..?

Thread resurrection time.
After Martyrs we didn't watch any horror stuff for a while; that was so unpleasant (and unexpected, as I deliberately don't read about the contents of a film if I can help it, so it doesn't get spoiled; i won't read the backs of books for the same reason) that we went off on a tangent and ended up with a bit of a Christopher Nolan season (I hadn't seen Insomnia for years...).
So last night we were in the mood for something scary again, and in the same vein as 'not reading the back of the DVD case' as outlined above, we put Audition on, with no idea what to expect. Guess what? More disappointing, excessive, illogical and stupid 'horror' from the mind of someone who needs professional help. I wouldn't mind if it was scary, but it wasn't. It made little sense, was dull for the first half, then went mental pretty quickly, but without reason or logic. We are suffering a lack of patience with directors who can't tell a story well, so just go for the shock tactics.
See The Orphanage for a well-told, unsettling but logical psychological thriller. It can be done. Take note, shock directors.
So, we have [Rec] coming up next I think. Or The Grudge maybe, but I only have the Yank version; anyone know if its worth holding out for the Jap one instead?

I like the Grudge (the US version). I think it is a very decent 'Horror' film - the first two you watched are nothing more than torture porn, and not genuine horror films, IMOHO.
[REC} is also good.

I should do an update really, as we've watched a lot more than those two. So, with help from this thread (not my memory, which is dreadful):
We have watched: The thing - great film The thing (2011) - unnecessary. Why? Original still stands up and is better. 28 days and weeks later - both good, though the first has the edge. The Descent - great horror film American Horror story - TV Series. Really good actually, and consistent. Event Horizon - Luncay. Not that scary though? High Tension - barking, a 'must-see' Audition - see above. Dull, then stupid. The Orphanage - great psychological thriller The Ring (yank remake) - good, liked it, relied a little too much on jump cuts to scary faces The Shining - not scary, but unsettling, and the end has always annoyed me. That poor black guy! Let the right one in - weird, and good
Still on our list to watch (feel free to add GOOD horror films to this): The Grudge (yank version) [Rec] Ils (Them) Saw (first one only) The Hill have Eyes (2006 remake) Pan's Labyrinth Inside
We like unsettling and clever rather than outright gore. We do not like misogyny without reason. The film industry is very 'male'.

Insidious is a good modern horror that doesn't resort to gore or mysogyny
