Can I ask, what did people thought of this film? No spoilers though as I still haven't finished watching it.

So far I'm shocked by just how bad it is. The acting is wooden, there are some terrible SFX (the sea background on the boat at the start) and the score is just bizarre and doesn't seem to sit well with the visuals. I get that some of the elements are trying to reinforce the insanity aspect but for me they just don't work.

And to cap it off within 25 minutes of watching it was pretty obvious what the outcome was going to be (I mentioned it to my wife who's seen it before), which isn't bragging on my part as I usually don't second guess the endings of films.

Given the cast and director I'm shocked by how bad it is.

Anyone read the book it's based on, as I suspect that might be a LOT better.

So what did you all think, am I missing something?

I enjoyed it, why no spoilers if you have already figured out the plot smile?

I liked it too and thought there was a bit of a double twist at the end.

Right finished watching it.

I liked the ending, it was ambiguous enough to make you ponder the meaning and yeah I agree with you eyebic.

BUT I still can't get past the score, SFX and some very very wooden acting. Reading some reviews it seems DeCaprio was utterly confused for much of the time, which may account for his stilted performance and perhaps the others too.

Jamie - Why not spoilers? Because I'd only guessed at the twist that he was actually the patient, no 67 not the exact plot line that it was his wife who had killed the children

So, I liked the story but felt it was terribly executed. Could have been a film classic had someone else tackled it.

Really enjoyed it personally. Had no issues with LDCs performance, the script or the score.

Thought it was a better film than the IMO overrated "The Departed"

+1

I'm normally very hard to please film wise and rarely come away with more than a slightly raised eyebrow...

I liked Shutter Island however.

I try not to think too much about films when I'm watching them and I didn't know the twist until it is revealed.

I thought it was a good film and bought the blu ray, but it's not a film I want to watch over and over again in quick succession.

I enjoyed Shutter Island a lot more than Inception (bought the Blu Rays at the same time) - I enjoyed the visuals a lot more.

However, it was quite obvious what the 'secret' was within the first half hour of the film. I think that these days, for some reason, Hollywood films aren't half as clever or innovative as they'd like us to think they are.

I thought it was st TBH. I like most of Dicaprio's films so I was expecting good things from Shutter Island, even pre-ordered the DVD when it first came out. The twist was stupid.

MOH and I both read the book, thought iit was good, got the film through on Love Film and gave up after 20 mins.

As has been said, terrible acting, nowhere near as engaging as the book and rather disappointing as seemed like a good cast.

tbf That's true of the majority of films where one has read the book before hand. They can never live up to the power of the minds eye.
