but no its not a racist film. Well, this is how I saw it (maybe I'm wrong, but I could easily see how some people might be offended): Aliens = black people Aliens are dirty, filthy scum, and everyone wants them out. Nigerian gangsters were cannibals that had a witch doctor and had prostitutes that had sex with aliens (bestiality). Whether or not the aliens represented black people, could be a non-issue as it's a film about aliens, not black people. However, the portrayal of the Nigerian gangsters was full on, blatant racism! Could be worse, I guess. It could be like Crank.

All I remember was that every single ethnic minority in the film was made to look like a powerless, weedy idiot. The only example I can remember was the Indian-looking taxi driver who wanted his fare, but Statham just pointed at him and shouted "AL QUIEDA! AL QUIEDA!!", and then 2 white pensioners (one of whom was a woman), tackled him and started beating him up! I'm sure there were more bits like that. And yes, the film was dreadful on top of that, too!

. have you ever met a nigerian gangster? or some some rough south africans from the townships? I only spent a week there but the stories on the news were beyond a joke. Art imitates real life in this case i think. life is cheap down there.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, it felt like a documentary with "names and races changed to protect the victims". I say this as one who was born in SA and spent the first 2 decades of my life there.
Very good film, although I suspect some of the more subtle humour and un-subscripted insults may be lost on those not from those parts.

Swordman said: Isn't this just a massively racist film? No, it's a movie about racism. It's a commentary on what happens when you marginalise people who are different to you without learning about their fears and motivations. It's a South African movie about apartheid, pretty much saying "we were wrong" at the end.

It was filmed in a township that had recently been cleared. Those alien houses weren't props, but actual shacks that were once peoples homes.
I did read that some of the interviews with people (of all races) who said they should be sent home etc were about refugees from Zimbabwe.

It is one of my favourite films. It starts out all 'Verhoeven like' with a slightly spoofy documentary/newsflash feel and then progresses into a really gripping adventure. I was almost cheering for the double act as they battled to get where they needed to be and I agree the film does a cracking job of making you feel for the hero and a cgi prawn! That robo-suit is AWESOME!
The racism thing, if you've a chip on your shoulder you'll find it, when the whole storyline is practically a parable of two (and a half) guys battling to defeat the racists, one of them a passive racist himself.

It was local blacks not whites doing it. there were also stories of rapes /murders a girl burnt alive in fact several burnings i was only there a week and only watched teh news a few times.

Please could you explain because all I saw was negative stereotyping of gangster (who were black) rather than racism towards black people? For it to be racism there has to be negative discourse surrounding their ethnicity (not a simple acknowledgment of it which is a common mistake in modern times). Now I've only seen the film once and wasn't looking out for racism specifically in the gangster scenes, but I thought the portrayal of them was very stereotypical gangster and maybe a little overdone as you say - w es etc. but not racist? Or was the Nigerian aspect of it?

I've got the Blu-ray, watched it with adverts anyway . I'm not too good with hospital/operation based bloodjuice, so the lab bits with his arm still turn me a bit green, but it's a really good film.

They both portray Italian gangsters.
