I borrowed the DVDs of Mad Men from a colleague last year to watch while I was recovering from having my wisdom teeth out and I was hooked on it from S1E1.
I love how understated it is, yet still shocking in many ways. Like the scene where Betty and Don pack up their picnic and simply launch all their rubbish onto the grass then drive off and leave it. And the ceaseless smoking and drinking. Superb TV.

Enjoy - you won't be disappointed.
I was.Having heard all of the hype surrounding this, we obtained series 1 from LoveFilm and were very underwhelmed.
It is admittedly very slick, and the production is good, but there is no substance to it whatsover, and it is actually really boring.
Thought I would dig up an old thread rather than start a new one. I have been making my way through Mad Men from S1E1 as they are all on Sky Antyime. I am really enjoying it.
It is interesting what was said on the previous page about not liking any of the characters. I thought Pete Campbell was awful to begin with but he is so slimy and appalling that you can't help but like him. I sometimes find myself routing for him. Roger is terrible but he is so extreme that his character is very funny, its almost a pastiche as it is hard to believe anyone could be like that. The Don character is odd. In some respects he is the great male character with the looks, style and doesn't say much but when he does it is worth listening to and at other times he is a complete bellend.
Slightly annoyingly I am half way through S3 and Sky Anytime seems to have misplaced S4 & 5.

I some respects it is a bit like The Wire in its pacing. There will be a row of two, three, even four episodes where very little happens and then suddenly it all comes at once.
Here are few moments that I found good but may not be enough to float your boat.
Some of those above are not major plot points or story changers but a funny/entertaining bits.

- Pete Cambpell finding out Don's secret past and trying to blackmail him with it
- The ride on lawnmower episode
- Duck Phillips going up against Don and losing.
- The creme de menth party
- The chip and dip

This is a problem and has been discussed above. It is hard to empathise with characters when they are so flawed but I found that eventually you find something in them that interests you. Even if its because you hate them.
The funny thing is that if someone said to me why do like Mad Men, I can't really answer it. I can't put my finger on what it is. With The Wire, Sopranos, West Wing, Hannibal, Veep, House of Lies, The Newsroom, etc etc etc. its easy.

I'm in the same boat, having watched series 1-3 as Atlantic re-ran them.Sky seemingly don't have the rights to re-run 4 and 5 at the moment but plan to do so at some point later this year.
I had to leave series 6 when it aired until I had seen 4 and 5, which was a bit of a pain....
I've watched them all, but I increasingly wonder why.
Sure the sense of time and place is good, the acting's good and the cinematography is good, but the story has a distinct sense of going nowhere after 5 series...
I think I keep watching in the hope that everything will be revealed, but I suspect there's nothing to reveal... A bit like Lost, I understand, although I never watched that...
