They still talk of "cutting out fat" but "sugar swaps". Too much money in sugar for them to give it up.

Dispatches @ 9 - The Pope. Is he really fond of Catholicism? biggrin

Sugar, diets etc seem to be something of a hot topic just at the moment. However, typically the reaction is a touch extreme. How about putting some good, simple, unbiased and free advice out there. I guess there's no money in that (rather than helping people).

Jacques P did a piece related to this in the Grauniad recently, but can't find it as being search-dumb at the moment.

Sugar Vs Fat from Horizon this week.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03t8r4h

There was also another show on last night, not sure of channel showing how crappy the fad diet industry is.
Showed some crazy diets that I was not even aware of. Like the booze diet.

I suppose crazy diets make sense if you're blind (to reality), stupid, desperate, uninformed etc & someone says it works, while neglecting to mention the other stuff they do, or were gifted with, that makes it 'work'.
Same probably goes for about 98% or more of the exercise equivalents as well.

Just think how much of this could be killed off with some simple advice that was actually taken in, mixed with a bit of commitment. Never going to happen though - too much money & dumb involved.

The Truth about Low Fat Food
Monday 8pm
Channel 4 Dispatches: Reporter Antony Barnett reveals the huge amounts of sugar, calories and, in some cases, high amounts of fat, in some of Britain's best-known low and reduced-fat foods.

Sounds interesting, but I'm off TV and low-fat.

Also currently reading The Great Cholesterol Con - thoroughly recommended. Even Ancel Keys has admitted fat -> cholesterol -> heart disease wasn't true and he was the grandfather of it. Still, it appears "prescribe statins, get swimming pool" won the day. hehe

I have that book...or one very similar! Still not read it! But I started looking into that stuff after a discussion with my mum about my father and a possible high cholesterol level.

Shame that the book is bright red in colour and called "Why we get fat" or something similar, as it's not one you can read on the train.
why should you shirk away and be ashamed of it , it is a scientific fact

I don't think you can blame it all on "the man" and completely absolve people of some personal responsibility. Everyone knows firing in a McD's every day is bad for you yet there are still plenty who do after all.
The blame lies at both doors - food companies for their dodgy advertising and making food generally more fattening through increased added sugar, and people for just firing in ste all the time.
What you're saying is right. But it's also useless, unless you're goal is "feel superior to the fatties".

Anyone can sit in a chair and say that if somebody's fat it's their fault, just like I can sit here and say it's Bolton Wanderer's fault if they don't win the FA cup. Perfectly true, but ultimately that doesn't help them win, does it? It doesn't help fat people either, as you say, they know how it works. So there's no point holding such a statement up as an actual contribution to a debate about what to do. Look at me - I've decided everyone should cycle to work, thus getting their daily exercise. Hooray! What do I win when tomorrow, nothing's different?

If I wanted Bolton to win, I'd change the playing field somehow. I'd do the same for obesity too, and the best way of doing that is almost certainly regulating the bigger food companies, who (unless those marketing budgets are for show) damn well know how to change the field themselves. I really don't care that much if Nestle has to lay off workers because fewer people are buying their brightly coloured crap. That crap (after a point) isn't making people's lives better and those workers would be better off making something that does.

I sometimes wonder if the families of the CEOs are fat, or what they look like. Do their kids have litres of visceral fat? Or are they wise to it and make sure their own kids don't overdose on sugary/fat st. I wonder if they all look like Eric Pickles.
