IIRC the opening scene from Alien 3 is one that will really test your sound system to distruction.
It's just the spacecraft (Nostromo?) gliding through space with HUGE sound effects before it all kicks off and the escape pod is ejected.

The Dark Knight first scene is pretty good (the bank robbery)

All the good ones have been mentioned, though for impact on a wee lad can i cast a vote for Transformers The Movie (the cartoon)? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lo7JPLJUUUWhen you watch it, you never think there are 'others' on different planets...and to see them destructed so effectively is pretty powerful. It is still better than the latest 3 we have had on the big screen which is an added bonus!

A few greats on here some also-rans....
O/T I find kubrick hard to watch, any of his films tbh and I personally think the FMJ whilst it gets the message across is over-rated and its' perceived quality is based on the performance of one character and a few choice lines.
no other characters are really explored and the difference between the two halves is so disparate that as much as i want to I can't rate the film as highly as most do...
anyways openings....
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - you know something is going on, you don't know what, but you know its big. perfectly pitched and hooks you in from moment 1.
Jaws does the same.
Star Wars
Terminator
Raiders of The lost Ark...
all classics

After detailed analysis of my admittedly not very extensive DVD collection I've decided its either Raiders of the Lost Ark or The Life of Brian.

Car mayhem for 15 minutes....whats not to like! Great for a low budget movie. Leon is my favourite for a Hollywood movie.
