New series of Grand Designs

I applaud them for doing what they wanted. I really dislike the house but good on them for getting planning permission and doing it as they she wanted it (although at nearly double the budget ).
The faux-minimalism of the wife annoyed me though. She wasn't a minimalist; she was the same as anyone else, but just somewhat more obsessed with hiding all the clutter. A minimalist wouldn't have had the clutter in the first place. All show, poor go.

I applaud their creativity desire to make something different. Generally when there is a gap in a London street, it gets bought by a developer, and the result is inevitably a ghastly 'Barratt' style house, more suited to an out-of-town development. Or there is an attempt to make a modern replica of the Victorian / Edwardian neigbours that ends up completely ersatz. At least they have made something unique. I guess it's also a case-study for their business, so future clients can see what they are about. And the price - an average terraced house in that area ( assuming it was anywhere near Brixton ) is at least £600k, so they are quids-in too. Wouldn't want to live there though - and especially not with her!

I noticed that as well, but don't recall seeing on the programme last night.garyhun said:
Trouble is most of the cost would have been labour. So to build the same out of, say walnut or oak, would probably have cost similar. Madness from my pov, but they obviously love it.
Seemed crazy to me too. If you're paying 30 grand for a skilled cabinet maker to build you bespoke stuff, why start with ply?FourWheelDrift said:

Interesting that the two houses opposite, both have 'For Sale' boards outside!Irish said:

from waht you could see it was well put together, but it doesnt cost anymore to produce than a chipboard job... all cut on a panel saw the joints etc should be perfect....just glue together.. usual London prices I suppose..

You know how I said it looks just like the sort of thing that Dezeen would feature?
Well, guess what's just been posted over there:

Love it.
I cycled past the Brixton house tonight, and I have to say - I frickin love it! It's in an area of mixed properties - Victorian / Edwardian / industrial estate / housing estate etc, and it really adds something to the area. The one next door which is also 'modern' looks a bit of a shambles in comparison.
I wouldn't bet on those glass gates lasting forever though...
