New series of Grand Designs
Discussion
I watched the show tonight.
Amazing how just putting fking cells on the roof gets you planning permission to build some so horrendously clashing with the surrounding area.
fking horrible. Now don't get me wrong I actually like the outside to an extent but just not there in that street.
The inside was just st and she was really getting on my tits. I just know she would be a nightmare to live with.

John Pawson design on the cheap.
They've done really, really well with their budget but if you're going to do minimalism then you need ££££££ and then some more ££££££. Precast slabs didn't meet up with cabinet lines and bottom of beams visible on the soffits as an example.
Also, it felt like he was designing for her, with the busy clothes in a stark house.
They'd white boxed their Norfolk barn well, I'd loved to have bought that off then.

It's a rule.

Sloppy beyond words. I love watching GD as being in the trade it makes it even more cringy at times! How nobody thought to straighten the bolts and quadrupal check everything was square is beyond me! I loved how they were having to gas axe the steels to make them fit!
The bolts didn't really need straightening, what they want were cardboard cones around them, we used them a lot when we set up stantion bases, you set the top plate up or use shutter ply and drop the bolts through into the cones, when you strike it just lift the cone out or pull it apart. You can then tap the bolt around if need be but they will stay plumb when pouring as they're pulled tight anyway.
I was amazed they didn't use them, I'm sure I saw them use cones on the Shard programme.
As for making sure it's square, that goes to show how little experience they all had. First thing is to always check for square.

I record GD Australia so haven't seen that one yet.
What amazes me though is how much they all seem to cost.
I've seen bits of Australian GD a few times. One thing to remember is that the Aus $ doesn't equal the UK pound. A dollar at the moment is about 60p, in 2008 it was as low as 40p to the dollar (just googled it, they have a graph if you search 'australian dollar to pound'. I only found out the difference watching Australian Top Gear and thinking 'how much!!??!?' at all the cars What amazes me though is how much they all seem to cost.
