I don't get why people think a nationwide, mass-audience, radio station should appeal to them specifically. Most of us are individuals, not nicely fitting into some box on a sociology graduates chart of target audiences.
It can be done though. Australia's Triple J radio station is designed to appeal to a similar demographic as R1 but does a much better job (at least it did when I was there a few years back). They don't mind having some intelligent features on there in the daytime; you will learn nothing from listening to R1 all day.

Aside from Moyles I rarely listen to the radio but I still put Triple J on pretty regularly and I still like it. Well worth tuning in smile

I think Radio6 does a good job at catering to a mid-range audience. Shaun Keavney breakfast show is good, and as are the majority of the DJ's. I love the Saturday Jon Holms breakfast show, its quite bizarre!

I love the variety of music they play, but there is a lot of the older, more R2 aged music in there from the rock/punk etc genres.

I just need the spare cash to buy a Digital radio for the car and I can forget the child like travesty that is Grimmy.

I really like Triple J. We have an internet radio in the kitchen and we have that station tuned in. That and Absolute 80's (and 90's)

I rarely listen to the radio, only when I have days off really.

Listening now, there is a bit of humour there and the music is decent.
Think I will listen in for a bit see how it goes.

I listened to some of it again this morning. He was interviewing Louis Smith. The guy is not Mr. Excitement but Moyles had a laugh with him when he did it a couple of months ago. Grimshaw was just ..... dull.

And I think that is it. Nick Grimshaw is not actually a bad DJ, but he just doesn't have the right personality it seems.

I am off to start a campaign to get Christian O'Connell sacked and replaced with Chris Moyles ...

On the way to work it's whatever music I have on my Flash Drive then normally Radio Wales. Music is old but passable, one of the presenters is a tt but it's fine.

Forced to listen to Radio 1 in work unless I can find a viable alternative. Wasn't that much of a fan of Moyles until he left and we got Grimshaw. I'm 23 and I don't like anything he plays, anyone he likes, him, his style I hate all of it. Mills is a tt too, I can't stand him. The only funny thing he's ever done was the prank calls and that was years ago. Tries way too hard and always forced laughter

Made the effort to listen to Grimshaw this morning.......... he was awful. No excitement or enthusiasm in his voice, ste music, nothing remotely funny or interesting.

Just tedious.

I know that Moyles had his off days & his faults but come one - he was superb & he had a great team around him as well which, on a stty Tuesday morning sitting in the car on the way to a job interview (normally a 10 minute drive but for some unfathomable reason it took 40 minutes!!!), is what you want.

Something to laugh at. Not some gimp who hasnt got a clue. I'll give him 6 months before he quits.

Moyles, wherever you are, for the love of god PLEASE COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Summed up by the unfunny exercise routine which lasted about a minute too long as Grimshaw could not keep the banter flowing.

He has the occasional amusing quip but not nearly enough to fill a 3.5 hour breakfast show. The fact it is just him and the background producers (who play little to know part in the show) make it even more stale.

Apparently the press think he's great:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19711...

But as just about everyone else has pointed out, his style is stilted, awkward, unfunny, and just bad. Mind you R2 wasn't much better this morning on my commute frown

the (written) press and moyles were rarely the biggest fans of each other tho as he had no problem ripping into some of the crap they'd written. i can't see grimmy doing the same...

i'm listening still, because i can't do commercial radio and i'm just not ready for R2, but am just putting up with it rather than enjoying it. he had another one of 1 direction on today - pretty sure he had a different one yesterday? not that i could tell.

He is having a different member of the band on each day this week.

Joy.

Would normally be Radio 1 for me, ha a listen to Grimmy in the morning on his first show and again this morning. Bored the hell out of me and I switched over when he played an awful song to Capital FM, which isn't great either really.

They've aimed for a younger audience and have disappointed me, a 21 year old. Surely I am the target audience!? With 1D members and Justin Bieber constantly being talked about, they're more likely to attract 12 year old girls and sex depraved married women.

I always think the morning needs more talking, a friendly atmosphere and bit of light hearted humour and the afternoon should be for the music. I read Grimmy's show plays 8 songs per hour in comparison with Moyle's 5. 8 st songs versus 5 usuall st songs and a decent group of people to listen to, I know which I prefer.

If you actually read the comments, which are presumably the best they could find anywhere, they're not exactly great.

Every morning I've tuned in so far it has been the One Direction Breakfast Show. His voice also grates... not good for a Radio DJ!

I have to say I haven't tried it, but listening to him plug it over the weekend, told me all I need to know.

That said, Radio 2 is not for me. Chris is ok, and this week Zoe has been very good, but the music bounces from ok to WTF...

I'll stick with R2 for this week, and maybe give R1 a go next week, I fully expect that to be a very short lived experiment.

What's Capital FM's breakfast show like?

Got this on this morning as radio reception is bad in our office and Radio 1 is one of the better stations to pick up.
