Films that should have had sequels

Italian Job 2 : Flight From the Mafia and Expropriation of the Loot.
Title could be toned down to suit other markets
It was meant to happen! The famous cliffhanger ending was supposed to be a lead-in to another film, but by the time they wrapped it, they didn't have much money (they were supposed to be shot back-to-back) and the film was actually looking like it was going to be a flop. Funnily enough, 'not a lot of people know this', but the Italian Job was a bit of a flop when it was released. Got good enough reviews, but didn't make much money. It got a kind of second wind through TV and video releases once the Sixties got eulogisedTitle could be toned down to suit other markets
The sequel was actually made - of sorts - although by that point it was put together as a different film with different character names even though the cast was pretty much the same:
They had to rework the film as a standalone thing, and in some market its title was 'The Destructors', but the basic plot is: US intelligence sent to bring down Mafia boss in Marseille, turns out Michael Caine's character is after him as well (because he's got his gold).
When it was planned as a sequel, it would have begun with the gold falling out of the bus and the Mafia waiting at the bottom of the mountain to collect it.
Oh, and speaking of films needing sequels:
We need The Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley's People, with the same cast. Gary Oldman has hinted at it.

The Matrix should have had a sequel as should the first three Star Wars films; charting how Anakin becomes Darth Vader would have been excellent.
I also think Aliens should have a sequel. Pity they stopped the franchise there.
Agree with all suggestions. Such a pity they never made any of these.I also think Aliens should have a sequel. Pity they stopped the franchise there.

Interesting. Did not know that. Thanks The sequel was actually made - of sorts - although by that point it was put together as a different film with different character names even though the cast was pretty much the same:

Bit late for that isn't it? After two TV movies, 10 Series of SG1, 5 of Atlantis and 2 of Universe? ESOG said:

Some films should never have a sequel, well some films should even have a first viewing...
That aside, what films do you think they could have made a great sequel too but didn't.
I'd love to have seen a sequel to this, something a bit more sci-fi showing what would have happened as the 'next step'
Wow, this is the first movie that came to mind and in all honesty Contact was a movie which has stayed with me since I first saw it, and I always wanted more. I await impatiently the day a sequel comes out. But knowing the crap today they make it would probably suck. That aside, what films do you think they could have made a great sequel too but didn't.

I love Contact but it's one of those movies that works a lot better with the unanswered questions, especially given the nature of the movie itself.

What was in that bloody box!
Nothing.
It was just a ruse cooked up by the CIA to bring Seamus O'Rourke out of hiding. Sam wasn't a mercenary, but an active CIA operative working undercover to make sure the plan worked ('I never left', 'That's the first thing they tell you', 'I didn't come for you, I came for your boss') - and working in tandem with that guy in the Xantia in Nice. Unfortunately the rumour was too effective, spreading to the Russian underworld.
I suspect that the ruse might have alluded to a nuclear or chemical weapon. The case supposedly contained it, or the means to make it. But I suspect that there was nothing in it.
The timing of that film, although probably not intentional, was superb. The Good Friday Agreement was brokered around the time it was released, and the notion that secretly the IRA gave up their fight possibly because they lost their only chance to acquire a WMD works rather well.

Porsche 911S Targa versus Alfa Romeo Montreal. Pity about the awful music, but just listen to those engines!

a follow up of some description was planned - or, have I mixed that up with a book?
Youre right on both accounts. The film was from a series of books, so naturally they planned on making more films. But i dont think the first one was very profitable. Shame really, as it was such a good film!
Thanks for clearing that up.
Still remember that first heavy battle scene in the cinema - I kept my head down!!

Good shout on ID4, there is a book sequel (I have it at home, can't think of the name at the moment though).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1628841/Some of these should be left alone, however I'd like to see a *good* follow up to District 9.
I was amazed how old Independance Day is! Will Smith was still making the Fresh Prince when they filmed it!
