I enjoyed the new ones but didn't know much of the originals (TV or film)

I just can't stand the idea of the new Star Wars being a tried and tested vehicle for Disney. We want an original story, with brand new I AM YOUR FATHER moments.... not a 'reboot' of the original, which I'm now sure we're going to get. The studio will have seen how well the new Treks have done and asked the nerd friendly Abrams to do that again.

I hope I'm wrong.
You do realise that it is already very well known that this is not a reboot?.

It is a continuation of the original trilogy. (Calling it Episode 7 should give that away). Yes it has new characters but Han, Leia, Chewie etc are all there telling a new story 30+ years after the event's of Return of the Jedi.

No clue why you seem convinced it's a reboot considering all that has been revealed so far.
(I don't know how to hide spoilers, but from what we've been shown thus far, this is how I think it is looking)

As discussed earlier... a clueless young Skywalker resides on a baron desert planet, meets a droid, home is destroyed. A wizened old Han comes to the rescue, opens Skywalkers eyes to the plight of the galaxy. The Empire (or New Order) is galvanising power. A New Hope.

Skywalker suffers family issues. Shock family reveal (Rey is Han and Leia's daughter, Ren is their son). Battle between the Dark and the Light Side. Empire.

From there it all goes to pot, there's likely a Death Star, but Luke swoops in last minute to save the day (as Han did in A New Hope)

OK, so 'reboot' was the wrong label, but my concern is that Star Wars is too big a franchise to allow any creativity and so Disney insist that the new film be based on the frame-work of the originals. The details altered (as they did with Star Trek) slightly so as to allow the critics to scream 'homage' where the rest of us sit and watch the same movie we've already seen.

Abrams himself actually came out to voice those very same concerns recently (I read the article after posting here). That he felt the story to Trek 2, but also Super 8 (which I've not seen) were fundamentally unfinished. A character switcharoo in Trek (Kirk's sacrifice) does not make an original story.

I know there's only (something like) four original stories in the history of film, and that Star Wars itself was a rip of The Hidden Fortress and countless other (great) Japanese movies, but I just don't want to see Star Wars by committee. A movie made within the template of the existing movies. Because it SHOULD be a continuation of the universe, and we don't need Star Wars history to repeat itself to satisfy Disney's profit goals.

All this talk of reboots remind me of Tie Fighter for the PC. When it came out, I had to chose between either having sound, or textures.
Changing between the 2 needed a different boot disk, to either load the soundblaster driver, or not.

Eventually, I saved up for the extra 2 megabytes of RAM needed to have both at the same time. That was an awesome day.

Similar with Quake and 3DFX cards... spent an age prattling around with graphics settings, trying to balance max resolution with details (although, come to think of it, I can't recall if there were any detail settings within Quake?!)

Anyway, I eventually saved up £100 to buy a 3DFX card. Spent more time getting it working but then... GL Quake! That was a good day, too.

Ahh the perils of XMS and EMS memory and trying to get everything one way or the other using Memmaker.exe!

pfft, memmaker was well overrated. All about the dos=high, umb and device high= everything smile

I think I learned the hard way though - we bought our computer from Time and it was a total stitch up. The rediculous hard drive controller needed a driver. Driver tht HAD to be in the first 640k. I had different boot disks for almost every game, the most challenging being tie fighter and theme park..

I think if you put all the footage together you can almost work out a rough plot - or at least an order in which the three worlds are visited?

Not watching any more tbh. I've seen two trailers which is enough to wet my appetite so I don't need to see any more or try to work out the plot. Many of my most memorable movie experiences have been as a surprise. I remember the Matrix build up was genius, not really giving anything away and that film blew me away on first watch.

Besides it's only another month away. [Red Leader Mode] Almost theereee [/Red Leader Mode]

You guys have much more will power than I.
I'm worried it will be another TPM - I couldn't deal with the disappointment!

Sometimes I wake up at night screaming and sweating in my sheets at the thought of that! (not really smile)

I can't imagine the rage I and many other fans will feel if this turns out to be another TPM.

Andy Serkis has been talking a little about his character. It's easily found via Google. Sounds very interesting. He doesn't give too much away but you can always read between the lines!

Is Donald Sutherland in it - looks like him standing to the left of the conference table at 00:48

If DS in in it, they should get clint and Kojoak as well. They could do cameos as a band that only know 1 song...

Anyone aware what certificate this has/is getting?

I found the trailer was classified PG so assume the same for the movie itself. It's just someone mentioned last night it was a 12 like most marvel stuff. Which means I can't take my 6yo.

I don't think the 12 certificate exists anymore. Now it's 12A which means you can take your 6 year old with the added benefit of pissing off everyone else in the cinema.

Yup no such thing as a 12. SPECTRE was 12A, we had a 6ish year old in our 7:30pm screening, he was bloody terrified at times, asking his parents to take him home (which was light relief from him giggling at the sex scenes or asking questions every 5 minutes)

What sort of moron would take their 6 year old to that?! Apart from it being pointless as they wouldnt have a clue whats going on, the new era of Bond is pretty bloody violent.

Just finished rewatching episodes 4, 5 and 6 with OH, she'd never seen them, and did enjoy them.

ROTJ is my fav, and the final 20mins or so always makes me feel a bit emotional.

Looking forward to Ep 7.
