You'd also assume that the empire would have tight control of the media.
It's not an unusual concept that long distance communication (over galactic distances) is hard and expensive and unreliable and that the best and often fastest way to get information between planets was to put it o n a ship and fly it there.
For example why wouldn't the rebels have just uploaded/emailed/transmitted the death star plans rather than physically transported them. They were digital so no reason not to "the plans are not in the main computer"
Ninja's are real, right?

Here's a treat for you Star Wars fans that haven't seen it (discussed in today's Guardian). Apparently they tried to bury this and, after watching for more than a couple of minutes, you can see why.

So faster than light ships but no intergalactic news service in the future, not to mention a big Jedi temple in the middle of the capital city of the Republic which everyone on that planet seemed to know about so not THAT secretive. Not dismissing it as I and I can understand why they'd want to use it as an interesting plot device, I'm just saying it's a bit of a stretch.
OK, a stretch, but some more reasoning. Obviously they exist, I didn't say it was a secret organisation, I said it was a secretive. Jedis do stuff and people are surprised, or probably don't notice, a lot of their power is misdirection and mind-influencing. Nobody believed Vader could do owt in the first film, hence the backchat, and as said, even Moff seemed intrigued by Vader's lil stunt...and he's known the guy for 20 years.
I have a feeling Corscuant would be like Berlin or Moscow.
Luke mouthed off a lot because he was like a kid given the powers of Father Xmas.
Han says "she'll do point five past light speed..."
(sounds cool: let it lie and move on) or (apply geek rationales):
"wot you on about Han? you mean 1.5x light speed, so you'll take 2.6 years to get to the nearest star instead of 4 years?"
Han replies "yeah all stars are in within a few days travel at low multiples of c, yet the night sky looks much like normal because this is a story fudge and you're not meant to examine it in detail, ESPECIALLY when JJ get's his hands on the plot elements..."

It's not the film offering up these explanations though it us geeks.
The film just needs to be logically consistent, over explaining stuff doesn't work (see midichlorians for details).
Exactly! It loses the magic if you try and explain the universe. We just need a good story, good characters, good plot twists and good entertainment for 2 hours! The film just needs to be logically consistent, over explaining stuff doesn't work (see midichlorians for details).

I think someone said above, in an Empire of 100,000s worlds, trillions of people, there are only 10,000 jedi or so? And they're a pretty secretive lot.
That is how I've looked at it too, most people wouldn't have heard of the Jedi, yet alone seen one, so easily dismissable as a myth by most, even before Order 66.Bullett said:
Finished watching Jedi with the boy last night.
It had the revised ending with celebrations across the galaxy, so that sort of messes up the big place little communication idea (well done george).
My Fiancée hasn't seen them properly before so she suggested a star wars marathon of the originals soon It had the revised ending with celebrations across the galaxy, so that sort of messes up the big place little communication idea (well done george).
Sadly i gave away my dvd's to my nephew so i only have the blu ray (hayden christiansen special ending

Yep I could well buy into the big galaxy, slow communications theory. I can even buy the fact that with only thousands of Jedi and billions\trillions of people spread throughout the galaxy, seeing a Jedi wouldn't be an every day occurrence so most people wouldn't even know they exist, ACCEPT that in the prequels EVERYONE recognises a Jedi or at least knows about them. Even Watto (spelling?) the blue flying slaver on a backwater a*se end of nowhere planet like Tattoine knows about them and that is within living memory of Anakin's lifespan. Plus the instantaneous Galaxy wide celebrations when the second Death Star is destroyed in ROTJ pretty much puts paid to the slow comms theory. Once again George's meddling puts paid to any decent continuity.
Let's face it, if you look at all the evidence logically, people conveniently "forgetting" about the Jedi doesn't add up. They'd have been better off setting it 200 years in the future if they really wanted to make that work but they wanted to keep the original cast for fan service and the "it's all true" line\plot is simply put in there because they thought it would be cool.

That's George's original vision for Star Wars.
And here's Disney taking a Robot Chicken parody and saying "hey, that's a good idea" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cH8JBxnuw0

Amen brother "it's just a film" isn't some kind of slur because they're just fun films to enjoy. The film just needs to be logically consistent, over explaining stuff doesn't work (see midichlorians for details).
When the writers feel like they've got to appease not only the geeks who dissect every part of the existing films frame by frame or heaven forbid the fans of the "expanded universe" because the self-appointed guardians of the universe have read some fan fiction someone wrote in the 90's and "consider it cannon" they're trying to make a film with one arm tied behind their back.
Just make it cool and leave lots to the imagination, that's what made the first ones so good.
