I saw it on 3D IMAX at Kingston cinema and was very disappointed with the screen quality, so much so that it spoiled the movie a bit for me.

The lack of contrast was really puzzling at first, the space scenes were not black at all - like looking at a 10yr old LCD with the brightness up too high. And the 3D? the cross talk was horrendous, I was seeing ghosting on the text that was really really bad and the motion with the 3D and high action scenes made me feel nauseous. I would be interested to hear what other people thought of the showings at Kingston and at the BFI.

Maybe it's me, but Jurassic World at the same cinema was much better in 3D IMAX although I still much prefer the 2D versions.

I need to go see it again in 2D or better yet wait till I can get the Blu-ray on my OLED.

Oh, great movie by the way.

Reading this makes me feel glad I didn't travel an hour and a half to Cardiff to see it in IMAX!

8.5/10 for me.
Better than the prequels, probably over all about as good as ROTJ, not as good as ANH & Empire being by far the best of the lot.
The new cast members were great, in particular Daisy Ridley, who completely stole the show.
I'll need to watch it again in 6 months or so (whenever it comes out on Blu-Ray) but I can't help thinking it's not much more than a rehash of the storyline of A New Hope with a few bells & whistles added. I'm thinking episode VIII will be better than The Force Awakens.

People shouldn't be quoting spoilers as it breaks the spoiler tags.
People ought to go over to the other thread... http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... ...if they want to post spoilers. Leave this thread free of such things, at least for a few more weeks to allow everyone the chance to see it first.

Went to see it today, and it was great. It's a proper Star Wars film, and its a good mix of the original cast and the new ones.

Oh yeah, and I want a BB-8 hehe

The new cast stole the show, and that surprised me. The casting director deserves a raise!

I went to see it last night. Enjoyed it a lot.

I'm going to take my 7yo lad to see it as I'm pretty sure he will enjoy it too.

Has anyone released any figures yet concerning if any records have been broken yet??? I'm thinking highest grossing film.
Too early for much in the way of hard numbers, but so far confirmed...

- US/Canada opening night record ($57m)
- UK opening day record (£9.64m)
- UK advance ticket record (2m)
- Biggest opening in a whole bunch of other countries

Unlikely to break the biggest UK weekend record though, Spectre opened on a Monday so had nearly a full week to add to that total.
Are these inflation corrected figures?

Saw it last night with some friends and my wife.

We all loved it! Personally I thought it worked well as a film in it's own right.#

Loved the new characters particularly Rey, and BB-8 was fantastic!

That's me done for this thread, onto the spoiler thread!

Oh and I'm planning to see it again soon smile

Saw it on Friday, I'd give it an 8/10 but one of those points is for nostalgia value. It got a hell of a lot right, the new characters are superb, Rey is the heart of the film and both Finn and Poe where excellent additions. Also BB-8 has now replaced R2 as my favourite droid in the Star Wars series and I didn't think that was possible.

However the film does have some issues, far too many ideas borrowed from the originals, I was sort of expecting this and thought I'd be fine with it but it was a bit too much and at times it felt like I was watching a remake rather than a new film. I understand why Disney did it but they've played it too safe. Secondly the old guard actors were also surprisingly weak with only Chewie covering himself in any sort of glory.

It's still a good film and I plan to see it again but not as good as it could have been.

Hmm, even though I felt it was lacking in areas, I think the playing it safe option was the safe... biggrin way to go. After what has happened recently. What I like to think is that this really strong reaction of, 'you've finally got it right' will give Disney more confidence to take it into new places, in the same style they have used for ep7.
I am expecting a fairly strong ep8(2).

More confidence like George Lucas had with Jar Jar kinda confidence hehe

Having read some reviews it sounds like it's a lot like A New Hope though.

Surely the Star Wars universe isn't doomed to rhyming dark/light force events ad infinitum every generation?

It's almost non-sensical that in such an advanced universe where bobbing around the galaxy is just day to day fare, that events and those involved in the relatively recent past can just fade into hardly believable legend in a few decades.

Oh they nailed the feel of the OT completely which is probably the one of the most important bits they had to get right and the first 2/3rds of the film was awesome, I just think the Starkiller plot line wasn't really necessary, in fact the film would have been better without it. It just felt a bit like a shoe-horned box ticking exercise.

Disney Studio Exec "We have to have trench run in there, it's not a Star Wars film without a trench run"

That's been covered! tongue out

"Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen *anything* to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. 'Cause no mystical energy field controls *my* destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense."

"Luke? Luke's crazy! He can't even take care of himself, much less rescue anybody.
A Jedi Knight? Jeez, I'm out of it for a little while, everyone gets delusions of grandeur!"

"It's true. All of it. The Dark Side, the Jedi. They're real."

Box ticking exercise indeed given the price Disney paid for SW.

Hopefully their commercial needs won't hurt SW like Lucas's hubris did with ep1-3.

Hehe smile

I think if they spaced it out so there was a full lifetime between each trilogy it might work a bit better... but then they couldn't have carried characters over as easily.

Maybe in this corner of the galaxy people have a memory of about 10 years then forget stuff?
