Nolan.
Youve got two hopes. I suspect Whedon has been asked already and would be a very popular choice. Whether he says yes, however...

I'm worried at the thought of Disney trying to make a truly Disney version, with cute easily marketed cuddly characters. Like Jar Jar Binks, but worse.
Couldnt be any worse than Jar Jar, Ewoks or Ep1 (entire)

Allegedly, and this is me delving into the mists of time in my much fuddled mind, the Star Wars saga was always due to be 9 films in total 3 middle (the originals) 3 pre and 3 post...

Aye, i remember that. I suspect it was just lucas chancing it though.

They really need to focus on the smugglers/bounty hunters more this time and leave that bunch of dressing gown wearing, wand waving navel gazing old ladies out of it though.

Lucas constantly denied that.

What Lucas says and what Lucas does...

My source was one of the original SFX guys from the first trilogy, my mum taught his kids at a prep school in the late 80's/early 90's, I think it was the early 90's I met him, I was almost wetting myself in excitement, after all this man had had his hands on the Millenium Falcon (coolest ship the galaxy, no arguments).

Nice guy and very tolerant of an over excited teen berk, pushing him for info on films he'd worked on a decade previously.

Q: Does that mean you won't do Episodes VII, VIII and IX?
Lucas: I will not do VII, VIII and IX.
Q: You will not? Will they be made by somebody else?
Lucas: No. They will not.
Q: So this trilogy ends it?
Lucas: This is it. This is all there is.

This is it, semantics I think...

There may have been the story in place for 7,8 and 9. But as Lucas has made clear, no interest in making them himself.

If he was still alive Irvin Kershner for director.

A bit of a curve ball nomination but how about Luc Besson for director...

I'd love to see Fillion involved in some way, but i think they'll go a little less obvious.

Besson's a good choice too.

Expanding on Besson theme, how about a role for Jean Reno. Reprise a Leon style role, there's a Han Solo quality there, the assassin with a heart....

Frankly when it comes to SW I reckon George Lucas usually talks out if his arse. He made 1 great film that was a huge success and he got lucky by making a lot of money by holding the image rights. So he made some more and made each more commercially viable by introducing more creatures you could make toys of - the rot set in with having cute Ewoks instead of the Wookie home world.

The idea that he had this huge saga all penned out in 76 or whenever which would have spanned 3, 6 even 9 films depending on when you ask him is BS IMHO.
