Besson would be great if you could get him back into the directors chair.

As Star Wars nerd, this is bad news. The new episodes were ste but what I am worried about is what is going to happen to all the extended universe. I can see them making a new trilogy completely fking up what dozens of writers have been creating for the last 20 years.

Id quite like the Timothy Zahn Thrawn Trilogy to be made though

It all depends on doing it well.

Lets be honest, if its good its a license to print money. If its st it will still make money but less so

I honestly think it's a good thing, since with his constant tinkering Lucas now does the franchise more harm than good. The whole thing is in danger of becoming a punchline (Star Wars Dance Central on Kinect ffs), so some fresh blood, and hopefully an entirely new story arc, is just what could be needed.

What Lucas says and what Lucas does...
Quite.

A Long time ago in a galaxy not that far away Lucas said:
Special effects are just a tool, a means of telling a story. People have a tendency to confuse them as an end to themselves. A Special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing.

My overriding feeling on the news.

Losing Lucas is no great shame considering I, II & III and the creative editing of the originals.

A touch nervous regarding any new films following his lead.

Another vote for Whedon over here.

But would he want to do it?

I'm worried at the thought of Disney trying to make a truly Disney version, with cute easily marketed cuddly characters. Like Jar Jar Binks, but worse.
I take it you've never seen Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure or Ewoks: the Battle for Endor then (if you haven't for god's sake don't).

As Simon Pegg's pointed out, does this mean Leia's a Disney Princess now?

So, we know Lucas has consistently changed his story about how long his original saga was. We know anything he's touched in recent years has been dross. So in that respect this is good news.

But here's the bad;

Disney? Are they really going to make a Star Wars film that'll be aimed at teens and adults? Or will they give in and aim it at the children that all the original Star Wars fans have now had?

As already mentioned, what about the EU? Star Wars has already desecrated it by inventing ret-conning, are they going to completely disregard Truce at Bakura and everything that followed? Zahn, Stackpole, Anderson, Aalston. These are guys I grew up reading.

Merchandising - the action figures used to be good. But look at them now. LOOK at them. Far too much aimed at young children when Star Wars was never about that.

The mockery. We as fans are going to be mocked mercilessly for this. At least the Trekkies never had to take this much abuse!

I too am worried that the 20+ years of expanded universe stuff will basically be voided if they make another 3 films, unless its not about han, luke Leia etc, in which case it could be interesting.

Needs a more mature director, i.e. whedon, Abrhams etc and aim it an older teen audience but some kid fun too, ala avengers or new start trek. pick an audience dont try and make a film for both, i.e. a few laughs for kids but thats about it.

Disney has a history of making more adult films, like the black hole, Tron and sequal, the 20,000 leagues under the sea in the 50's is also a good example.

We will see what it brings, the clone wars tv series is the best thing from SW i have seen in years and thoroughly enjoy it, so a bit more of that level

They need to darken it all a bit. I think I'd like it if Chris Nolan directed, doing to Episode VII what he did to Batman Begins. I don't want to see a CGI spunkfest; I want to see model shots.

Quentin Tarantino to direct and Eric Bana for Han Solo. Make it g.ritty.

With the disney thing, what's the betting the whole thing could be in a pixar/ toy story style?

Ah well, they can fk this up but they can't change the originals.

Q: Does that mean you won't do Episodes VII, VIII and IX?
Lucas: I will not do VII, VIII and IX.
Q: You will not? Will they be made by somebody else?
Lucas: No. They will not.
Q: So this trilogy ends it?
Lucas: This is it. This is all there is.
Disney: Here's £4.2bn George. Don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.
Lucas: Whoo Frickety Hoo. Do what you like boys
EFA

Apart from that, could be good, could be bad. No more ste Lucas dialogue at least.
