There is a clue hidden in the thread title. If one is not interested in Star Wars. It is clearly labeled to avoid it.
Oh purleease. There isn't the requirement to be a "gushing fool" to contribute to this thread. Dissent and discussion is allowed. Maybe we need a sub-thread for "starrey eyed fan adulation, no negativity allowed"? biggrin
Well if one is not interested in the continuation of the Star Wars franchise, why would one wish to comment?
Sure someone could point out that it does not look good or they don't like the actors cast etc, but saying they are not interested in Star Wars continuing is daft in such a thread.

I thought it showed promise, I've gone from somewhat sceptical to quietly optimistic but I am trying like hell to temper the excitement factor. After all we've been here before, the PM trailer made it look bloody awesome and look how that turned out.

I'm also not getting the camera angle argument. I can understand people complaining about the too shiny CGI in the prequels but complaining about impossible camera angles?? Surely the whole point of CGI is to make the impossible look possible?

Oh for sure. I wasn't saying otherwise. Apologies if I was misunderstood.

Yeah, I am totally with you. I am trying so hard not to be the bh that I was for Phantom Menace.

Indeed, I can still remember how pissed off I was walking out of the cinema after enduring that.

I hope to Christ they get it right and don't do another Prometheus on us....

Me too.

I like the nod to the damage received to the Falcon at the battle of Endor - in the form of a new sensor dish

Also, the camera angle complaint makes no sense to me. Why would you care about whether those shots could be caught by a cameraman or not? I want to be immersed in the action by the best view possible rather than being limited to where a camera can go.
Consider it like this: when you see a bloke larking about on top of a massive building that's quite obviously CGI, it doesn't convey much sense of danger but when you see Jackie Chan doing it, it's awesome:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ticE-Eg7I8o

Another example is in Fast and Furious, when you see the camera going in through the engine and coming out the exhaust. Nobody in the audience thinks they're seeing reality, just a bit of animation.

For me, the camera isn't an actor and shouldn't have a part to play beyond presenting the scene. Once it becomes part of the scene, I find it distracting.

I should add that I love CG and I wanted to work in visual effects when I was a kid (er.. which is why I probably over-think a lot of this stuff biggrin).

When it's used creatively it can be absolutely fantastic (Black Swan springs to mind as a beautiful example of how to do CG properly).

However, when it's deployed because it seems the producers just aren't very imaginative, I'm less than willing to go with them on it.

Don't be an arse. I'm a huge fan of Star Wars. But I like good films. So I won't just accept any old st that's squeezed out the collective bottom of the production team and gets a light sabre poked into it like a cocktail stick.
Quite. Those of us who were stung by Phantom Menace are totally with you here. I certainly am.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but already that trailer loses me by having CG provide 'camera angles' that a camera couldn't get. I HATE that.
Yes, I totally agree. Films like this are all about "willing a suspension of disbelief". Camera angles like that strain the disbelief and they shouldn't.
That is utter nonsense. If you are suspending disbelief, then by definition, you are not even thinking about a camera.

Rubbish. Willing a suspension of disbelief is an active thing - an act of will by its very definition. So if something knocks that or distracts from it, then the suspension can be destroyed.

Really? By stating that "willing a suspension of disbelief" is an act of will? I'd have thought I would have been accused of stating the bleedin' obvious rather than have someone disagree with the statement.
