Based on reviews on here watched "Bad Words" this weekend - about a grown up bloke that finds a loophole in the rules allowing him to enter a Spelling Bee competition. Thought it was pretty good, funny mostly, with a slight sad/serious undercurrent towards the end.
Reminded me a lot of Bad Santa actually - similar type of guy (basically a complete ahole) that eventually becomes friends with an (initially) annoying little kid and we eventually see his softer side.
Solid 7/10

Incendies - French/Canadian film with subs, but bear with me!

After a woman succumbs to a stroke at a swimming pool her son and daughter attend the reading of her will and are mysteriously instructed they must journey to her birthplace in Lebanon before they can commemorate her death. While the son is reticent the daughter soon discovers she didn't know her mother at all.

It's a bit confusing at first because the film meshes a series of flashbacks from the mother's life with the daughter's journey of discovery, and there are some striking parallels between mother and daughter, but once I twigged what was going on I got really engrossed.

It's quite brutal in places, and I was left wondering whether it was wise to lead them to the shocking truth, but it's a very good story.
My wife and I found that film to be the most depressing piece of cinema we had ever seen.

A sickening reveal.

Priest - action vampire western set in alternative universe. It was a very pleasant surprise for me - solid honest story, albeit without much of imagination. What's better - vampires don't kiss each other and humans, and they do not look pleasant either. Overall - sort of a B-movie, but very good at that. 6.5/10
yes agreed, watched this last night, absolute tosh but a solid 6/10

Saw the new Hercules on Saturday in IMAX. It was very good action movie. Typical muscle bound Dwayne Johnson performance with some witty moments and good CGI. Not the greatest plot but never going to be but a great twist on a classic Hercules story. 7/10

Saw Dawn of the planet of the apes on sat with the GF.

Was an excellent film and thoroughly enjoyed the whole 2 hours.

Excellent CHI and motion capture and the use of sign language and subtitles was inspired.

Recommended.

I wouldn't say it was VERY good in the action department. It was neither gory, which makes the action believable, nor very well thought through. For example, the second action, when Rhesus sent cavalry first against spearmen's wall head-to-head. What kind of idiot would do that?. Anyway, it wasn't supposed to be historically acurate action film, and it is aimed mostly at kids. I'm not a kid though, and it's 6/10 at most from me.

Good fun and lots of amusing sci-fi references for the geeks amongst us. A little strained about 2/3rds through but overall very enjoyable. As good as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. For me as a sci-fi nerd, this is probably my pick of the Pegg/Frost films.

8/10.
Saw it for the first time and really enjoyed it.

I know it's essentially a comedy but if I met a communicative and easy to get on with alien I'd be inclined to ask a few more questions about his home planet and the technology his species had developed i.e. I'd be a bit more curious than the two dumboesque main characters.
It's certainly better than the last one they did!

Managed to get hold of Expendables 3 this weekend. I know these films aren't to be taken seriously, but it was awful. Crap acting, cheesy jokes and amateur CGI. The whole of Romania was greenscreened in very poorly. Wasn't expecting great things from it but it was a lot worse than I thought it would be.

The Town - A group of renowned criminals rob a bank and take a lady hostage. After the job, one of them stalks her, keeping tracks of her and starts falling for her. The rest is quite predictable but it is a great film nonetheless. Good work from Ben Affleck, both in the acting and directing. It's 2 hours and 30 mins long, but it doesn't drag on as much as I thought it might.

I love The Town, its a great film, the casting was pretty good, Jeremy Renner and Blake Lively were particularly good!

Anyways, this weekend:

Panic Room

A home invasion movie and a fairly average at that. Nothing was particularly good but in fairness nothing was particularly tragic either.

6/10

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
I was really looking forward to this, I loved 'Rise...'. It didn't disappoint, good story, good acting from the humans and great mo-cap for the apes. Whilst it was relatively predictable it still kept me interested and rather pleasingly it was all about the story rather than a CGI action-fest, which I liked. Its how CGI should be done, as an enhancer, not the central element to a film.

My only criticism is whilst I can't fault it in any way, there's nothing that blew me away. Whilst it was all good quality there was no single set piece that really blew me away - hence why I couldn't give it a 9!

8/10

Are you kidding me? Worst movie I've seen in the past two years.

Utter tripe, no redeeming value of any kind (and I'm a sucker for popcorn flicks) 2/10 at best.
Avoid.

I'd rather watch the Robocop reboot 3x than have to sit through RIPD again.

At least the Robocop film tries. IMHO, it's a bad robocop flick and it's name is it's worst offence. It's a fairly mediocre popcorn flick and far from cringeworthy bad like RIPD.

The ONLY redeeming feature of this film was the Steely Dan gag.

Just watched "The Jacket" with Keira Knightly. Quite enjoyed this, quite an odd film about a bloke who gets out into a mental institution, I won't explain what happens or anything but it's worth a watch, if not fantastic.

Somewhere around 7/10

Finally got around to searching for Sugarman last night. On the one hand, it's a heart warming tale & he's clearly a decent guy in a tough city. OTOH the idea that he gave away most of his later royalties in some kind of modern day Jesus schtick strikes me as a bit naive & subsequent googling suggests he's had a bit of an about face on that score.

Still, Clarence Avant is an ahole.
