Good films I watched this weekend (Vol 2)
Discussion
3 films this weekend.
Killer Joe - matthew mcconaughey is a cop and part time hitman who is hired by a dysfunctional and thick trailer trash family to whack their mother. Things don't go to plan. Theres a few glimmers of exquisite black comedy (the suit scene in the lawyers office) but mostly its an entire cast of horrible people doing horrible things and I didn't really enjoy it much. I have a deep fondness for Gina Gershon though, so the first time you see her is quite special. But the last time you see her will put you right off your Kentucky Fried Chicken. Wouldn't watch again.

The Rover - I love Guy Pearce and I like post apocalyptic type movies, but this was hard work. Set in the near future in Australia ("10 years after the collapse") 3 criminal on the run steal his car to get away, and the film is his single minded effort to get it back, for reasons revealed at the end. Pearce doesn't say much, mostly just repeating the same questions to people "have you seen 3 men in a car" again and again. He finds the 4th (wounded) member of the crew, played by Robert Pattinson, and having not seen the Twilight films, I always assumed he was just a pretty boy. But his performance is spectacular. If you liked "The Road" you may like this.

Fed Up - fat people need to eat less and exercise more, right? Well yes, but this fascinating (US) documentary details how in the past 40 years the big food and drink companies have manipulated government policies and WHO reports to create a vicious circle that makes it hard for the public to avoid sugary food, even when (and often, specifically because) a food is labelled as "low-fat". As a reasonably slim chap who now does a fair bit of exercise, ive started thinking of myself as fairly healthy, and if im honest, this film has made me reconsider a lot of things. Going back to the first review, you could say its put me right off Kentucky Fried Chicken - ba-dum-tish!

Zero Theorem - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2333804
"A computer hacker whose goal is to discover the reason for human existence continually finds his work interrupted thanks to the Management; namely, they send a teenager and lusty love interest to distract him."
This is a wonderfully odd film, very Gilliam, very clever with a lot of subtext about modern life and the 'human condition'.
It's great, shot like a hyper-colourful acid trip, with sets that look like a Blade Runner remake. It's not quite a cool as Brazil or 12 Monkeys but really worth a watch.
7.5/10

I watched two films over the weekend which I genuinely thought I'd hate:
American Hustle - well shot, well acted and quite a fun ride.
A Million Ways To Die In The West - wife wanted to watch this, and I found myself laughing a lot, and I am not at all into Westerns, let alone comedy Westerns!

Anyone remember Cactus Jack? That was a great film. Crap but good.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080097/?ref_=nm_flmg_...
12 Years A Slave - 6/10, although the acting was superb Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender were incredible. The film is so god damn depressing. warning to anyone be in the right mood or it will sap the life out of you. I think if I was in that right mood I would of scored it higher.
The Equalizer Other then not being able to get Edward Woodward out of my head in his long coat with his big Jag.... I loved this film, a dark, brooding, violent, cool revenge/retribution story....on the edge of beig believable ....great entertainment. 8.4
A Walk amongst the Tombstones Liam does quiet and calculating for a change, seemed to me to be a cinematic episode of Taggart or something, not alot 'special' about it, but worth an watch, if not the £20 to see it on the big screen.....average entertainment. 6.9

I seen and loved this at the cinema, and last night, I bought it on SKY Movies (to keep digitally and they send the DVD when released), and enjoyed it just as much on our TV - a very entertaining film.
Oh that's worth knowing! I have it on pre-order with Amazon on Blu-Ray and am getting antsy waiting for it to be released. I'll look into that. Thanks!Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
