Watched Detachment over the weekend - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1683526

It's a bit depressing but fascinating film, really well acted and looked great.

Worth a punt if you don't mind something a little bleak!

7/10

Watchmen. I've seen it before but it's still very powerful.
Saw that for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Excellent film. The first five minutes is incredibly well filmed and the Bob Dylan soundtrack is perfect.

Also watched Seven Psychopaths at the weekend. Great fun film, like Colin Farrell's confused Irishman shtick.

The Fault In Our Stars

Powerful weepy romance that just stays the right side of mawkishness. Includes an incredibly moving performance from Shailene Woodley who is an excellent young actress.

I liked this trilogy when I was a teenager but hadn't watched them in years. I watched "A Fistful of Dollars" when I found it on the TV the other day - and enjoyed it. I might have to dig out the DVDs which I've bought an never watched.

On a subject of Clint Eastwood, I still haven't got round to watching Gran Torino.

Worth it - not the most exciting title but a great film.
Million Dollar Baby also worth a watch.

I like the other two films too but nowhere near as much. To me, it's as if they were just practicing for GBU with the first two then hit a 6 with GBU.

As a kid, I loved Clint Eastwood films - I still go out of my way to watch them - but over the years I've come to appreciate GBU for the performance of Eli Wallach. I was very sad to hear about his death earlier this year, not least because he was such a nice guy in real life (married for 66 years) but he died aged 98 - not a bad innings for anyone.

Not sure how we got started but I ended up watching The Cannonball Run with my 6yo daughter this evening. Some of the language was a bit inappropriate but it all goes over her head at the moment. She loved Captain Chaos and Jack Elam's "doctor" most.

Another one from my childhood. Saw it at the cinema when it was new and I've loved it ever since.

I have deliberately never watched any of the sequels. I love the original for what it was - that moment in time. It's not a perfect film by any means - some of the characters were irrelevant/unknown to us English - and the sped-up Countach wasn't necessary. But any points lost to those flaws is more than made up for with the out-takes during the closing credits (those bleeds?), Farrah Fawcett, the Countach, and it's drivers.

9/10

The original Gumball Rally is a better "road" film but more of a car-buff's film. No sped-up footage, Raul Julia at his finest, and a duel between a Daytona Spyder and Cobra. Motoring heaven for me but I doubt it'd appeal to a 6yo girl - and watching TV with her is just The Best. smile

In stark contrast to the above brilliant car films I'd like to mention a film I watched this weekend:

Getaway

Lets just start with the score, I'm going for 1/10 and that's being generous.

Take a vague generic plotline, the worst master criminal on the planet, the least likely getaway driver and the worst tech nerd possible and you have this film. Now I'm a geeky tech type that's into cars so I always go into these films expecting the worst but this far exceeded those low expectations.
If we are to group driving films together and compare like with like then we get a bit of the Transporter, a bit of Gone in 60 Seconds, a dose of Fast and Furious and a massive pile of turd. Statham must be due an oscar if we are to judge his acting against this film.

By far the worst part is the lack of continuity, a 5 year would notice the failings. I accept that due to the way car chases are filmed there are times when damage can vanish or appear at random but this film takes it to a new level. The car (a modern remake of Elanor) is self healing, self cleaning, bullet proof when needed, full of constantly mobile bullet holes at other times and would appear at others to be completely indestructible.... until it isn't.

Rounded the day off by watching Cloud Atlas.

I really don't know what to say. It was certainly of epic ambition, had a lot of really talented actors, and tried to draw together 6 stories across 500 years. It was beautifully shot too.

BUT the sum of the whole was not well resolved. I wont be unkind to suggest it was disjointed but I think the message they were trying for was not projected clearly enough to make it ultimately satisfying.

I do suspect this will bear repeat viewing and my opinion of the film may improve accordingly.

I'm going for a 6/10 but think repeated viewing may lead to an 8/10.

Nightcrawler: Fine acting, tension, action, a crackling script. A strange character finds his calling supplying the local news with near-immediate on the scene footage.....Try and see it without finding out much more about it, it'll help. 8.5/10

Getaway. Turned off after 5 minutes.

Three days to kill

6/10

Ok entertaining enough. Didn't know what it was though. One minute tough thriller one minute family comedy drama.

Nothing new. Costner does taken with added sentiment and a bit more lighthearted. In places.

I felt the same, it's like it wanted to have some deep message about life but couldn't come up with one.

Still worth a watch though.

Agree with 6/10, if only for the visuals.

Watched V for Vendetta a couple of days ago. Went into it with high expectations but unfortunately was somewhat disappointed. I understand it's based on a graphic novel and it shows. If that's your thing - great. If not (and it isn't mine) - not so great.

Got half way through Watchmen the other day in between trips to the khazi with a stomach bug and thought this is ok but not entirely sure what it is trying to be..then realised I had another 80 minutes to watch of the three + hours.

i'll go back to it though...

X-Men DOFP. I really really wanted to like this, great cast, new actors, fantasy plot but it didn't grab me and like lots of time travel type leaves you with questions, not that i will spend a lot of time pondering them its Marvel no Sagan afterall...

6.5/10 for effort, half a mark off for mckellen and stuart 'phoning in their parts.

is there a separate thread?

Interstellar - going to be different and say I was severely underwhelmed. It's not terrible and its not amazing, it's just...meh.

I think I was actually a bit bored and never really felt 'in suspense'. Also some of the effects 'lacked polish' but that's more howwe expect pristine CGI now.

I really lost my suspension of disbelief for the final 1/4 as I just kep thinking 'this makes no sense'. Maybe I'm just dumb.

Well filmed, nicely scripted and very well acted but much like Nolans other sci fi mind bender Inception I have no desire to watch again.

Shame as I went in wanting to adore it.

P.s I think I just gave up believing its credibility due to the way in which Cooper gets chosen..

P.p.s 'love is the fifth dimension' oh do fk off.

P.p.p.s to many contrived situations and plot holes.

P.p.p.p.s actually the more I think the more I feel annoyed that a film so up itself that makes so little sense has fooled so many.
