Predestination

Ethan Hawke

8.5/10

Absolutely brilliant spin on a Time Travel tale. Very very original with a great twist or two. Thinking mans Sci-Fi. Superb stuff. Do yourself a favour and watch it now. Gets 7.5/10 on IMDB from 31,647 votes.

Watched fury yesterday.

Brutally realistic portrayal of the last days of WW2. some pretty graphic stuff in there. Good performances all round I thought. I know Shia Lebouef has a reputation for being a bit crap, but having not seen any of his other films, I thought he was pretty good in this.
Final battle seemed to turn into an action shoot 'em up as the germans went into derp mode, but then real history is full of officers who got their men killed by being stupid and there are stories of things like that really happening in the war, so maybe not as far fetched as it looked...

good film 7/10
yes

Good review that pretty much covers my thoughts and having seen SLB in a number of other films I can confirm he's a lot better than usual in this.

Nothing ground breaking but entertaining enough.

Predestination

A mash up of other time travel movies (Memento, Adjustment Bureau, Looper) but has a certain charm of it's own. Worth a watch I thought.

I had never heard of it so here's an IMDB link.

Err ..no it isn't. Great performance by Benedict Cumberbatch but apparently aimed at people with ten minute attention spans . Film has oh so predictable scenes to make us feel good about our enlightened attitude to clever women (we just knew that Keira Knightley was going to be good at big sums unlike those horrid men)and gay people (we are fine about it - they weren't ). Dialogue awful and packed full of terms that simply were not used then .A really really dumbed down film which apparently is getting huge audiences.
Think you may have got your films mixed up.

Watched Stonehearth Asylum. Story about mental patients running the asylum, pretty good performances from Ben Kingsley, Michael Cain and Kate Bekinsale.
I did- meant The Imitation Game

A mash up of other time travel movies? Can't agree.

None of those films that you quote have the same plotline/revelation of

everyone of the main characters both Male and Female actually being him at various points in his life from birth to death

Took a leap of faith with two movies on Now TV without reading anything or viewing the trailers (always much better to see a film that way if possible, in my opinion)...

Time Lapse

Very well made time-travel film with no more than 6 or 7 characters and 99% of the film shot in one room. Really enjoyed the premise and execution.

The Borderlands

Very slow-building West Country horror film where Vatican investigators are sent in to look into claims of a miracle. Rarely have I felt so uneasy watching a movie, and the ending will be swilling around in my mind for weeks.

Well I'm sure someone will thank you for the spoiler, Kareem.

Anyway, "Predestination" is a very good sci-fi film, and the acting by female lead was absolutely incredible. Solid 7/10

The Salvation (2014) - a Dutch western (!) with very good cast (Mads Mikkelsen, Eva Green, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and that baddie bloke from district 9 - funnily enough no major american actors). I wouldn't call it very original - just a revenge story, of which there are many. But acting was good, and Eva Greed managed to develop a character without speaking a single work through the entire film. 6.5/10

Das Boot - never watched it before. Has heard the majestic main theme and the hype surrounding it. Well, all I can say is that it fully deserves it. Best character development I've seen in years. 9/10

Blade Runner, I tried again to watch it to the end, made it an hour and switched it off, been trying to see it to the end for 20 years or so and have never managed (well there was once but I fell asleep so it doesn't count)

3/10 from me, despite the reviews.

Haywire.

I'm sure without the flashy & famous director its script wouldn't have made it out of the Direct to DVD bin but it had a great cast and was very tightly shot.

Won't need to see it more than once but was a very enjoyable time filler. Only bad point was that it just sort of stopped and why he just didn't shoot her in her house before she went to Dublin I have no idea.

I'd go with a workmanlike 6.5/10.

Have to agree - its the Apocolypse Now of sci-fi.

A tough watch.

I know little about the background on this subject but suspect the US saved it all. Without little help from other countries wink

Hmm, been a long time since I've seen this. It's a bit lost on me.

I watched this at the weekend and found it to be a big stinking tedious pile of crap.
Crap storyline, crap one-dimensional characters, crap dialogue and crap casting.
FOr so many big stars to produce such bland irrelevant characters was quite a feat.
I have also never seen a film that I care so little about whether they achieve their goal or all die. Both outcomes would have been similarly un-notable.
My wife really like it, btw, but I give it 3/10

Saw "2001 : A space Odyssey" with my teenage son on the big screen at the local Vue.

I've seen it several times before and always got bored by the travel through hyperspace bit towards the end (it just seems to drag on and on). On the big screen that part of the film is totally mesmerising and makes much more sense.

The big screen also re-inforced the perspective tricks that are dotted through the film. I can't think of any other film which is as carefully shot and lit as this is, certainly none from the last few years at least!

It was odd to actually have a 10 minute intermission, but at least the film was designed around that and it wasn't just shoe-horned in.

My teenage son loved it, and didn't think it was boring at all, although we both agreed that the monkey suits were a little weak!

Possibly the best film ever made, including the best match-cut in cinema, a great soundtrack, outstanding use of colour & perspective and economic dialogue. It's a proper grown-up film(*), so if you get the opportunity to see it on the big screen then I highly recommend it. 10/10, 5 Star, must see etc...

(*) In comparison, most other films consist of just pointing the camera in the general direction of people doing stuff.
