Good films I watched this weekend (Vol 2)
Discussion
Automata
In a post apocalyptic future, civilization is in a precarious state and is heavily reliant on robots.
Antonio Banderas plays an insurance agent tasked with investigating reports of robots violating their two protocols (Do not harm anything living, do not modify yourself)
Decent sci-fi with elements of blade runner and district 9
7/10

the monuments men, I enjoyed it
I know little about the background on this subject but suspect the US saved it all. Without little help from other countries
I watched this at the weekend and found it to be a big stinking tedious pile of crap.I know little about the background on this subject but suspect the US saved it all. Without little help from other countries
Crap storyline, crap one-dimensional characters, crap dialogue and crap casting.
FOr so many big stars to produce such bland irrelevant characters was quite a feat.
I have also never seen a film that I care so little about whether they achieve their goal or all die. Both outcomes would have been similarly un-notable.
My wife really like it, btw, but I give it 3/10

I would also have turned it off but for my wife declaring that she was enjoying it (presumably just to spite me I think).
It just got worse and worse. I found myself staring at it with glazing-over eyes like when you are trying really hard to politely listen to a terribly boring person.
I assumed that because the subject of the film was a bit tenuous that the 'true story' was going to be particularly interesting for them to bother to make a film about. But it really wasn't. The film was:
1) Dull people drive to places in France to see if there is any art there.
2) If there is art there then smile
3)If there isn't then drive somewhere else to see if there is any there.
4)Repeat until the viewer can stand no more.

On the recommendation of others here - I watched Predestination.
I thought it was a decent film. A bit quirky in places - mostly "good quirky" too. Using a beautiful actress to play a character that was specifically not meant to be beautiful makes that character hard to believe-in sometimes but I went with it.
I reckon I saw through the twist almost as soon as we were introduced to both characters together, although I didn't see *all* of the twist until it played out. And it was enjoyable watching it play out.
I would definitely recommend it.
8/10

Mr Brooks
Serial killer meets a number of other psychopaths including an interested newcomer, an imaginary friend, his daughter, and another serial killer, all in the course of his trying to work out how to stop himself.
I enjoyed most of this film but not the ending. For the majority of the film, the Mr Brooks character exercises "quiet, methodical menace" which was fun - trying to predict how he was going to play-out his part. But the ending became all too predictable and, in fact, felt rushed. More, it felt unfinished.
Actually, it seemed as though it was set-up for there to be a sequel. Wikipedia suggests it was to be the first in a trilogy, and it shows.
Worth a watch though, definitely. 7/10

Two parter (4 hrs) starts on Sky Atlantic - Sunday 'Olive Kitteridge'.
I've seen part one (it's on Sky 'see it first') and if you like Fargo, you are very likely to like this. HBO keeping up its high standards. It's a lot more subtle than Fargo, and starts slowly, but you'll see what I mean. (Same actress.. from the film, not the TV prog).
Can't comment on the ending... so no score, but well worth a watch. It's not any sort of action pic!
'Newsroom's John Gallagher' also in it.

Just watched Margin Call (for the fifth time). No sex, no drugs, no violence... not even a car chase.
Almost faultless. 9.5/10
A fave of mine, very well shot film.Almost faultless. 9.5/10
Try Tom Hardy's Locke, shouldn't work as a film - basically a bloke, on the motorway, talking to various people on his phone for the duration, but his whole life is disintegrating around him.

I tried it and although he plays it very well, I switched off after 30 minutes.Another top pick from me is Django Unchained.
Not sure I've seen Margin Call, so off to hunt it out now.
Silverado
I love westerns, mostly Clint Eastwood ones but over the years some enduring classics from others have popped out like The Shootist, and Open Range. One of my favourites shouldn't really work as it's basically a cliche of every other Western storyline joined together, but Silverado *does* work thanks to the stellar cast (so many super stars in this film), excellent photography, and general feel-good nature of the film.
It's about as perfect a film as you can get to me 10/10.
