Whiplash

I don't like jazz and don't really care for drumming.

But fk me this was fantastic. Really was such a fantastic movie, J.K Simmons absolutely stole the show - he was fantastic. I hope he gets best supporting actor, he deserves it.

9/10

Absolutely agree, wasn't sure I even wanted to watch it at first, was gripped very quickly.

Hitman, forgot how enjoyable this film was, Timothy Elephant was perfectly cast, shame there wasn't a sequel
Agreed!!!!
Watched it tonight based on this recommendation. Not sure about Oliphant perfectly cast - he's such a bad actor. Overall though it was ok, good mindless watch. 6.5/10

Also watched Cold in July. It has so many twists and turns in its plot, but somehow it worked. Enjoyable though not easy to watch. 8/10

It's Quinn from Homeland playing the lead though.
I wonder if he worries about getting shot when he goes for a pee..?

I can understand that review. The car chase was terrible. I just preferred the slightly different scenario
Taken was an 18
Taken 2 was a U
Taken 3 was PG-13

Slightly sad to say, but this is directly correlated to the quality and realism of the film, the best thing about the original was the brutal grittiness and honesty of the violence (apart from the slightly Hollywood final boat scene). If you were a desperate father, trained to kill and surrounded by scumbags who kidnapped your daughter - you would shoot a baddie in the back / on the floor to survive. Not in Taken 3 you don't

I came out the cinema after watching it to find someone had reversed into my car, with a witness leaving a note but no contact details and only the car reg. I played the following scene in my head..

"I don't know who you are, I don't know what you drive, but what I do have is your reg number, a dinged skoda and a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired from watching my dad's james bond boxset. If you pay now to fix it that'll be the end of it. I won't look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you"

Went to watch American sniper, rather quite enjoyed it. You forget it's a real story until the end, then it's a sobering last few minutes.

8/10

Next up is whiplash, which I've heard a lot of good things about.

Would you agree with the statements that its not to dissimilar from a Nazi war propaganda movie?

Applicable to most if not all war movies no?
I have thought this about the Afghan/Irag era war films.
I'm not entirely clear why 'we' went to war, and who won, but regardless of that fact, many 'heroes' have been born and heroic stories written, that normally end in "oorah!"

Not anti-war movies; Apocalypse Now, The Battle for Algiers, Gallipoli etc. or war ambivalent films like Barry Lyndon, The Bridge on the RIver Kwai etc.

Finally Amazon delivered American Hustle. Not bad but not as good as I thought it would be. Bale doesn't have to stretch himself but I thought Lawrence was pretty good and great curves to boot. Still not sure about Cooper but steady. 6.5/10

The Captive this gets LOW marks on IMDB, but it is only a hairs breadth from being a REALLY good tense thriller. It has the longest and dullest build up, but build up it certainly does....as a father spends 8 years tracking down his abducted daughter and the local Police force try and help by infiltrating a peadophile ring...
What does not do this film any favours is it's abrubt and unsatisfactory ending....well the ending is fine, but the pace of it is criminally bad, considering up to that point I was [cliche] on the endge of my seat [/cliche]
I'm going with 6.2 but it could've easily been a 7.5.

I bought and we all watched The Equaliser on Amazon last night - we all loved it - like Taken, it's a good ol' throwback where the baddies get their just desserts and are satisfactorily despatched. I enjoyed it more than Taken.

Jack Reacher - The advantages of netflix being I get to watch films I'd forgotten about. Anyway, TC plays JR which according to many is a travesty as the character is supposed to be massive. Not having read the books I didn't care and TC pulled the role off very well and it helped he was more interesting as a character than most in these types of movie. It was a pity therefore that the plot was daft and didn't really make much sense. The action was well choreographed except for the bathroom fight which descended into farce.
Overall though I enjoyed it. 7/10

The Theory of Everything

Didn't enjoy this as much as The Imitation Game. It is a very straightforward telling of Stephen Hawking's life from teenager to professor. Dodges controversial issues such as the alleged abuse by his second wife.

It will be worth it. I had no real interest in the subject matter and don't really get Jazz. Was just hooked throughout. Great Story, Great Actors and really nicely shot as well.

I have seen whiplash twice now and it is stunning, from the first seconds to the last. If you described it to someone, it would sound very boring but it has to be seen.

I love good movies, appreciate jazz and if I could play music, the drums would be my weapon of choice. I love a good drummer. It sounds like I really should check this film out.
