Just watched Commando. Arnie's best by some margin, and possibly one of the top ten action moves ever made.

Fury! Brilliant film, pretty sobering too, brad Pitt puts on his stupid voice from inglorious bds which is a bit irritating but I loved the film!

It's great isn't it, so many epic one liners and the way all the baddies line up at the edge of rooftops etc. as he approaches with his machine gun so they can dive off dramatically.

You almost expect it to switch to judges holding up their scorecards in between dives.

The rain spoiled my plans for today. We had no Plan B so had a quick look at the video list and decided to go for Page 8 this morning. Mistimed it a bit and ended up seeing the end with lunch on our laps. If you don't know it, it is an espionage thriller but without train-top fights. Cast list to die for. One of those slow burners that gradually draws you in.

We then decided to go for the sequel, Turks and Caicos, the weakest of the three I think, but still good, and then we went for Salting the Battlefield, the somewhat depressing end, finishing around half an hour ago.

A good Plan B as it turned out. Whilst seeing them all in sequence on one day is perhaps not the optimum, it was still enjoyable.

Whilst it was nice to see a PM, remarkably like someone we've all grown to hate, being torn apart, but depressing to realise that the bloke got away with so much.

You can't beat them in charge.

Might watch State of Play next Sunday if it rains. Probably my favourite TV series, even better than Pride and Prejudice.

Mr Brooks - On Netflix with Kevin Costner. Not a great fan of Kevin but this was a very good film 8/10.
Mr brooks is an awesome mostly unheard off and underrated film. I've read that he often gets asked to make another.

I crack up every time when they laugh in the car smile

Imp his best film by a long way.

I'm in Las Vegas for a conference so managed to get a few films in on the plane, the caveat here is Airplane versions. So, in order;

Big Hero 6 - The latest Disney toy selling escapade. It's well put together with some engaging characters but it's not anywhere in the league of the Incredibles. 7/10
Whiplash - Jazz and drumming is not the most promising premise for a film but this isn't really about either of those, they just form a backdrop to obsession and the search for perfection. Kept me glued to it the whole way through even if the final 'twist' didn't make much sense. 9/10
Sin City 2 - Not awful, just not very good, incoherent disjointed mess of a movie. I loved the first one but the art style got old quickly here, as did the ultra violence.
Fury - Loved it. A realities of war movie all dirt and survival and lets just get home over heroics that then turned into a let's be a hero movie in the last 20 minutes, and that's forgetting about the sudden transition from day to night. It's worth watching for the tiger battle on it's own and overall I think it's a 8/10

John Doe: Vigilante

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1418754/?ref_=nv_sr_1

another low budget Australian movie which punches well above it's budget and is a though provoking and interesting movie with a lot in common with the 1st Death Wish film. It's not an action film, if anything you could accuse if of being a little pedestrian - however it's worth a watch (although certainly not a 'date movie'!)

Big Hero 6 (7/10)- really enjoyed this, great animation, good characters and decent script. For some reason it's just missing that 'thing' that makes these sorts of films a real gem and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Foxcatcher (8/10) - great film. Channing Tatum is excellent, as is Steve Carell. Worth a watch.

Finally saw Fury on Saturday - I thought it was good war film.

You can pick holes in it, but overall it was good with some excellent action scenes and sense of jeopardy.

Watched what I thought would be a bit of a turd last night but was actually an extremely charming and feel-good film - What We Did On Our Holiday.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2725962/?ref_=nv_sr_4

Basically, if you like the BBC show Outnumbered, you will probably like this. It was also helped by the stunning scenery of the Scottish Highlands, and of course the delectable Rosamund Pike.

7.5/10

These movies with the comical baddies shooting blanks have aged badly IMHO - loved them when I was in my teens, wouldn't make my top 100 action films now. So many others with great action AND realism, and decent scripts/acting

Probably as was strategically written by the marketing people. Frozen did so well with the small girls they deliberately set out to create an equivelant for the boys.

Watched Dallas Buyers Club - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0790636

Story of a hustler who is HIV+ and needs certain unapproved meds to help his symptoms. He hits on the idea to make a lot of money by setting up a club, the drugs are illegal to sell, but you can give them away. So pay $400/month club membership, get all the drugs you like.

It's an interesting story, however I wasn't moved by it at all, he's a fairly unpleasant chap who for the most part didn't really care that he was helping people, was in it to make some money.

7/10

Kingsman.

7/10

Started ok but just ok. Got drawn in half way through. Worth it for a couple of scenes alone.

Not what I was expecting. Check it out if you can and you just want a few hours of pure entertainment.

The Railway Man

Had this for ages and never been in the right frame of mind to watch it. Since I've had a few days off work thought Id finally watch it.

Superb film and the ending... Let's just say it's emotional.

A solid 9/10
