Back from Vegas and managed the following.

The Interview - We all know what this one is about. I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it actually was and as such I was actually pleasantly surprised. Quite amusing in places. 6/10

The Equalizer - Not much to do with the original classic TV series but a pretty good revenge/don't cross the wrong man thriller that didn't get too silly. Not as good as Man on Fire 7/10

Bad Neighbours - A frat house moves in next door to a couple with a baby, they don't get on. Seth Rogen (again) plays the dad. Again, it was ok for this sort of silly comedy. 6/10

National Lampoon's European Vacation. I had seen National Lampoon's Vacation but not this sequel.

Quite funny, I think about on a par with the first. 7/10 from me.

Silver Lining Playbook - I know this is the 'good films' thread but had to inforce the fact that Oscar does not mean good film! Could only manage the first 20 minutes....appalling... 3/10
Bloody hell, just goes to show how we all differ, I watched this a couple of days ago and thought it was bloody brilliant and could not believe I missed it first time around, Bradley Cooper was superb and thought the casting was great

Margin Call on Netflix, great film about the tribulations of an investment bank just before the 2008 crash.

Really enjoyed it except for a somewhat disappointing ending.

Just in from seeing It Follows, low budget horror, quite good and rather unnerving

watched two films this weekend.

Dune
Im a big sci-fi fan, but my mate told me I cant call myself that until I see this, and also claimed it was brilliant. It isn't - its a pile of dog ste. Almost half the dialogue is internal monologue, with the (big star) cast staring passionately at each other while a voice says cringey things about what they are thinking. Dismal special effects. And Sting, who does nothing but smirk. Its one of the worst scifi films ive seen (and ive seen Alien Resurrection)

John Wick
Awesome action movie, about a widower who goes on a kill-crazy rampage when some Russian mobsters steal his car but, they didn't realise who he was before he retired from his old job (clue: not a windowcleaner). Full on action, and brilliantly choreographed guns and fist shenanigans reminiscent of the first Matrix movie. Keanu Reeves plays Keanu Reeves again but it wasn't too bad in this film. Good fun. And I lost count of the amount of headshots he delivers (he really is quite conscientious in that respect)

I've also seen National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation but I remember nothing about it, so presumably I wasn't that impressed!

'Rush'

Yes, I know I'm very late to the party on this one, especially in PH circles; it took me a while to get around to it.

Great film, really enjoyed it. The cars and the racing sequences were obviously great, and probably would have been enough on their own, but I thought it was well acted and well made overall.

Formula 1 was awesome back then, as it was in the 80s and into the 90s. Personally, I find it dull as ditchwater now.

Can anyone recommend me a good documentary of F1 back in the 70s/80s - one with more action than chat?

The Babadouk 9/10

I took a punt on this as I did think that this wouldn't be my bag at all.

This is not a 'horror' film in the ilk of the last 20 years of teenagers get picked off by an apparition that makes you jump, thus it pains me to put it in that genre. I'm not a fan of that genre at all.

This film has characters that are believable, and you care about. It follows a woman and her 6 year old son. His father died in a car crash on the way to hospital for the son's delivery. That scenario is played out in a sensitive and believable way, as it has left both the mother and son with obvious emotional issues, as clearly, she has not moved on, but he has obvious questions on who his father was. You do really feel for both of the characters.

The portrayal of emotional and psychological issues are spot on, and not only create empathy for the protagonists, but the 'dark thoughts' which worsen throughout the film seem very believable for people experiencing such emotional guilt, grief and psychological disturbance.

And that's the crux - like 'The Shining' which I think is it's closest film, for me, we don't know whether the son is disturbed, or the mother, or both, and that dynamic changes throughout the film. I'm not scared by 'horror films', but this was genuinely disturbing - the scariest film I've seen since The Shining. Not by gore or shocks, but through believable storytelling and chilling cinematography.

Highly recommended.

Tracks - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2167266

'A young woman goes on a 1,700-mile trek across the deserts of West Australia with four camels and her faithful dog.' Based on the adventure of Robyn Davidson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robyn_Davidson).

It sounds a bit dull conceptually but I thought it was really compelling, looked great, nicely captured the vastness and loneliness of the terrain.

It also has this wonderful score by Garth Stevenson, hadn't heard of him before but it totally created the mood, really quite special.

Ace film, worth a watch if you're interested in something different.

8/10

Thanks for reminding me - I've wanted to watch this for a while now but had forgotten about it (if that makes sense).

I will get a copy of Tracks if it's that good. I didn't bother before because it sounded incredibly boring, but I've now read your recommendations.
