Coherence 2013

Strange things begin to happen when a group of friends gather for a dinner party on an evening when a comet is passing overhead.

Really enjoyed the film, bit of a mind bender. 8/10.

Was in sky store for £2.99 deff worth a watch
Gave this a punt last night off your recommendation.

I think if it came under the same scrutiny as Interstellar and marked down on the scientific plot holes, it would end up with a minus humber out of ten. smile

That said it was a nifty little idea, filmed to a low budget which seemed to me to be fleshed out with hand held camera improv scenes to make it work which got a bit annoying.

However, if you have a penchant for low budget, clever concept, mind and reality bending sci-fi, I'd recommend these two as they are pulled off with much better production values:

Timecrimes

Primer

and not quite so low budget, and not quite so connected to the same theme, but still good: Mr Nobody

Serenity (although the series was better)
Does Gravity count as sci-fi?
Oblivion
Enders Game (not as good as the book but a good attempt)

Are all better than Armageddon, and those are the ones that come to me off the top of my head.
Good list. I thought Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow were particularly good. District 9 is a modern classic, although Blomkampp seems to have dropped the ball a bit with Chappie.

Armageddon wasn't even as good as Deep Impact.

I just watched Interstellar again. It didn't get any better.

I honestly can't remember a decent sci-fi blockbuster since Armageddon. Not everyone's cup of tea but it delivered what it promised.

Haven't seen Jupiter Ascending yet, but I just know it will disappoint me.
Sci-Fi and 'blockbuster' don't really go hand in hand, of all the great sci-fi films that have been made, very few have done well at the box office.

It's why they make fantasy movies instead like The Matrix or 2012 that get bums on seats but they're generally awful.

JAWS 4 The Revenge - 1/10 We'll I completed the entire Jaws collection, and what a delight this was.

Jaws comes back, dunno how, but it does, and kills the son of the police chief who is now dead after a heart attack worrying about the shark. One would think you would just move.

Anyway, this shark kills his son. So the mother flies to the Caribbean for a while to live with her other son. Thinking that Great white sharks don't like warm water.

But what's that, some bd has taken a chello onto the beach, sending the shark like a homing missile to finish her off. The shark has swum several thousand miles, to track down the mum who flew there.

It was just awful, it finished with the mum sailing out to sea to track down the shark and kill it armed with nothing other than a boat.

Michael Cane, a pilot who has a love interest with the mum, now wants to pump this shell shocked woman, he finds her and lands his plane on the water to help. I mean imagine trying to fill out the insurance form on that. Well I spotted a shark so landed in the water with it, before there was going to be one person dead now there is a chance of 3. Imagine telling the boss.

dreadful utterly dreadful.

Busy few days for me.

The Hobbit: Tedium of the 5 Armies
I didnt enjoy the LotR films really, so not sure why i watched the first 2 Hobbit ones, but since i did i thought i'd better complete the set with this last chapter. At least this was all action - to be honest they could have condensed everything into two films, or just one really long one maybe. Anyway, its basically a massive ruck, and some of the CGI battles would need an 80" screen to really do justice.

The Imitation Game
Very good film, very well acted by Bendydick Cabbagepatch, very sad (personal) story but also some humour along the way. Well worth a watch.

Interstellar
Enjoyable, long (2h45) scifi epic which kept my interest all the way through, though went a bit "2001" towards the end.

I Origins
Low budget sort-of SciFi about an atheist scientist studying eyes to prove that they evolved from creatures that had no eyes (thus disproving the intelligent designer counter argument). However meeting & marrying a mysterious spiritual woman (and her subsequent death) leads him to question his work. Reminded me of "Another Earth" - similar low budget film that uses a vague scifi angle to explore human feelings - and in fact its the same director, the same lead actress, and the new film has a "blink and you'll miss him" cameo from Tom Cruise's cousin who stars in the earlier film. Really enjoyed it actually.

Black Sea
Jude Law puts on a scottish accent as laid-off submarine captain who hears of a russian sub laden with nazi gold that has been on the seabed for 60 years, and together with a rusty cold-war russian submarine and a motley crew of psychotic british seadogs and vodka swilling Ruskies heads off to steal it before anyone else. Needless to say they havent left the harbour and already animosities erupt and the rest of the mission doesnt exactly go "swimmingly". Not one to watch if you are claustrophobic, but on the whole pretty good.

From those I haven't seen 'Pitch Black' or 'Enders Game' - are they worth a punt?

I've seen both and from the two I'd rather watch Pitch Black again.
Enders game is ok, but not great.

Cool - downloading now, curry ordered and wife out for the evening.

Looking forward to it.

Will also allow for 'Chronicles' to be next on the list.

I'd recommend skipping Chronicles and going straight to Riddick.

All the ones I've left were big budget films with star actors in them that sold a lot of cinema tickets.

errrmmmmm can I say Star Wars? (though I'll agree that it could be viewed as fantasy, it has rockets & lasers therefore it's scifi)
