Jeremy jahns, Chris stuckman and red letter media are all good reviewers as well. I trust their opinion more than most professional critics
I can't get on with Jahns style at all, too manic and over the top for me. Stuckman is OK if a little dull and nerdy. Best film reviewer on YT is still Kermode IMHO, not that i always agree with him.
Chris Stuckman always seems very natural, like having a chat with a mate about a film instead of being lectured by the traditional stuffy critic who won't upset his Luvvie Darling friends but refuses to believe anything good has come out of Western cinema since Battleship Potemkin. I often disagree with Kermode but always listen to what he has to say, and his Pirates of the Caribbean 3 rant was brilliant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZMfe4qnoKU

I like Kermode. You don't get people like him introducing series of films on telly anymore. One of the ways that telly has gone downhill.

If you like Honest Trailers I can also highly recommend Cinema Sins, Screen Junkies (especially the weekly Movie Fights show) and Schmoes Know. They do all have a habit of being rather 'Blockbuster' orientated but if you're a film geek (like me) you'll enjoy I'm sure.
I enjoy sins (though I think they are wrong and over critical a lot) and am aware of screen junkie but cannot recall what they are for. I'll certainly look at the others as well. biggrin

Best thing I've seen, Lando do, is Extras. biggrin

Agree about cinema sins, far too pedantic at times but I suppose that's point.

Screen Junkies Movie Fights is good fun, especially if Nick Mundy or Dan are on the panel. It's been running weekly since before christmas and I look forward to it showing up every Sunday night. Well worth a look.

Directors cut of Kingdom of Heaven is worth finding. Much better film than the theatrical release if you've not seen it.

Outlander* has been mentioned here a few times, so I'll be watching that tonight. It's on the Horror Channel (Freeview 70)

  • Outlander the vikings vs alien film from a few years ago, nothing to do with the series on Amazon Prime.

Watched Interstellar last night. It was actually ok - apart from Matthew Mcconaughey mumbling his way through the entire movie.

Agreed. Fantastic film but had to turn the volume up to hear him at the beginning.

I watched Spirited Away today, which I recorded as part of Film 4's Studio Ghibli season, and absolutely loved it.

Yeah, it's very good and is one of my faves of SG.
I've had to delete it without watching it though, as the SG films are now stacking up, and there are some I've missed on the original run last year.

Just finished watching Whiplash, great film. I wasn't really that interested in seeing it as I don't really like jazz, but really don't let the jazz thing put you off. Fast paced and involving, great acting and some epic swearing. Worth a watch.

The Reef.
Extremely good, very chilling. In an age where films don't scare me anymore this one did. Reminded me of Open Water. Not sure I'd watch it again...but saying that, OPen Water is on tonight and I'm plussing that.

White Tiger.
Saw it mentioned earlier in this thread so gave it a watch.

I enjoyed it, but it really felt like they had 3 films/plots and tried to sandwich them into one.

Spoilers below...

After the final tank battle with the White Tiger in the village, the film completely lost its way for me. The painfully long peace agreement scene, then dragged out scenes of POW's and the "War is man's natural state" speech from (I presume) Hitler?

Put a bit of a dampener on an otherwise very good film, but overall enjoyable.

A few years ago I swapped out the HDD in my Sky+ HD box for the biggest one it can address (I think it was a 2GB or maybe a 3GB - I can't remember to be honest. There is a limit to what it can address in firmware anyway, making drives bigger than the maximum a pointless purchase).
Right now I have all the Ghibli films that have been screened this season so far, plus a stack of other films, loads of past episodes of Wheeler Dealers, a few series of Red Dwarf, etc, etc., and it's still showing 67% free. Yay!

It was a bit of a pig to do it though - you have to completely disassemble the Sky box because the HDD is right at the bottom, under the mother board. It was fairly straightforward though and I found it quite fun. There are decent tutorials online and you just follow the steps.
Also, with the right software, you can even transfer over all your recordings from your old HDD to the new one. You need to go for the paid version at £10 though, which considering how good the software was and how well supported it was, I thought was fair enough and gladly paid in order to support the developer.

Oh yes! Totally! PM me and I will throw some links at you. Totally worth it if you have an out-of-warranty Sky+ HD box and don't mind seriously geeking out for a few hours. biggrin

"Lebanon". Lone tank by themselves. Much lower budget, but much more Das Bootness. In Lebanon. Obviously... In the 1980's.
I just watched this (not solely on your recommendation, don't worry wink) and found it infuriating.

I get the idea that were supposed to feel claustrophobic, but this utterly bored me.
Terrible crew, who don't do their jobs, who don't seem to ever lock the hatch to their tank.
I can't actually put into words why I disliked this so much. It left me really angry, as though the director laid everything out for me like I have the brain of a child (though I suppose he may have a point as I'm having trouble putting it into words hehe).

Felt like an old school B movie.

The Last Action Hero - bombed on release but I enjoyed it then, and I'm enjoying it now too. As an aside has there been a film with more star cameos?
