Cross of Honour - A Norwegian film, based on the true story of five airmen - three German and two British who are shot down and have to co-operate to survive.

The film features Rupert Grint, who plays a dart-throwing Scouser, who gets on the Germans nerves. There's even a car-related discussion in the film.

"Germany makes ze best cars in ze vorld".

"Certainly the most boring ones!"

"British cars - zey alvays break down!"

It's ironic that a bloke called "Stig" heads the cast list.

The German bomber crew even have a survival pack that contains sausages and beer. Make of that what you will.

Fifty Dead Men Walking.
A film about a special branch informant in Northern Ireland in the 80s. Didn't know anything about it, late night film on the Beeb. It was excellent. Had me hooked at the appropriate times. And another nice lil performance from Ben Kingsley as a SB guy.
Based on a true story but the guy it is based on doesn't like the film.

Woman in Gold
Helen Mirran trying to recover a Gustav Klimt painting stolen by the Nazis in WWII.
Based on a true story.
Far better than I thought it would be and a solid 8/10.

Not a film but a documentary someone mentioned earlier in the thread.

Road

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3546370/

As I'm not a fan of motorcycle road racing I didn't actually know any of the story which made it all the more fascinating. An amazing tale about a remarkable family.

Intoxicating 9/10

And yes I did cry like a big girls blouse, possibly more than once...ahem.

I turned Biutiful off after 20 minutes. I couldn't take it!
I just read the synopsis on wiki... feck me!!! I wanted to slit my wrists after reading just that, no thank you!
Do you really not watch films unless the baddies all die and the hero lives happily ever after? Biutiful is a very good film IMHO

I watch a film to be entertained (I'll happily get my dose of reality/depression by watching the news reading about current events) - if something leaves me bawling my eyes out or feeling depressed then it's not entertainment (IMO). There is no right or wrong in this just personal tastes

Agreed, I didn't say there was anything wrong with it - just think people would miss out on a lot of fantastic films if they just watch happy or action movies, which IMHO is a shame for them.

And I don't see gritty/sad/tough and entertaining as being mutually exclusive

i will also watch some films for escapism and find them entertaining too

I watched Dallas Buyers Club on Thursday night.

Still thinking about it.

Very good film.

MM was amazing and a worthy Oscar winner

Jared Leto was even better.

Saw a great Spanish thriller 'Sleep Tight' from BBC4. Like most foreign films, it treats the audience as intelligent and the plot isn't predictable.

Imitation Game - All the right ingredients but combined to disappoint. Neither of the lead's performances where particularly outstanding in my opinion and the the storyline was far to 'Hollywood' for my liking. 6.5/10

Saw John Wick on Saturday, really enjoyed it. Despite lots of people being killed and the simple plot it is very good

Just booked to see the first Avengers and the last Captain America double bill before the new Avengers is out
