Still Alice Could've...should've been longer.
An involving look at early onset Alzheimer's disease, with a decent ensemble cast.
Makes you think. 7.3/10

That's because you didn't see the signs.

Surprise at how bad it is?

biggrin

Sure, beings capable of interstellar travel pick a planet that's mostly made up out of what can only be described as the equivalent of burning lava to us.

Watched Unbroken earlier in the week and was disappointed as it was nowhere near as good as the book.
I also watched this over the weekend, thoroughly enjoyed it (as did my parents)...presume therefore that it's worth picking up the book?

The Well
A teenage girl fights to keep a water well from a self proclaimed leader after an apocalyptic event.

No dialogue until five minutes in. You knows it going to be ok!
Quite violent with good acting.

It's got a bloke called Boboo in it. Got to be good.

Watched all the usuals this week. FWIW

Unbroken: 7/10 Felt like I was watching a movie from the 60's/70's... not a bad thing. A very trad movie and good for it. Solid.

Theory of Everything: 8/10 (Redmayne completely nailed it... though all the back story is a bit too girly for me)

Birdman: 7.5/10 Astonishing, fantastic, but it's art... and continually lets us know. Loved it, but I never 'left my room'.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, nice lil film, liked the style and the delivery. Loved the voice-over. Had the feel of a historical story, though it wasn't. biggrin

Wall-e - 10/10

This was on the BBC (again) at the weekend, for me, Toy Story aside, the only western animation that is comfortably on a par with the best Studio Ghibli output.

I could watch the first 45 minutes or so on earth over and over again, the spaceship section is growing on me but I just love the near-silent stuff on earth.
I plussed it and watched it today.
Fantastic, I had forgotten how marvellous it is. The opening sequence, the perfect choice of Frank Spencer's song, the mingling of live actors. The emotion one feels for a dirty lil robot.
It's nice to see influences of different places like The Black Hole in there.

The Pixar Theory kept popping into my head though. biggrin

Heads up for "Margin Call" tonight at 11:15pm on BBC1.

A great cast and definitely worth a watch. It has the feel of a stage play, which is probably why they only took a couple of weeks to film it IIRC.

I just logged in to post that! I thought all the actors were superb, especially the lead girl. Very capable cast. Did you notice Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite?! Defies its small budget I think.

Also The Little Death (apparently slang fo orgasm) is a very funny film about a few couples where one has a slightly off beat fetish. Hilarious and tragic its another cheap Auzzie film that really works.

Ex-Machina First class near future sci-fi. Young IT employee wins the chance to meet the company boss and take part in his secret dablings in AI.
Other than not being long enough .....not sure I can fault it. Great audio/score, great visuals, decent story, beautiful scenery and sets, a twist or two, really well acted, good pace, tense, dramatic, thought provoking.... can't be a 10 though right?

Chalet Girl.

Yup, really.

The story has been told a million times before, it's as cheesy as all hell, but it's just done so well.

The whole film hangs off Felicity Jones' performance, and she brings this brilliant lightness to everything.

I overlooked it when it came out because it really does live up to its own stereotypes. But it does so knowingly. At one point, one character even comments that "it's such a cliche."

But it's so well done. I actually think it's the perfect date movie.
