Watcher 'The Stag' last night. Wasn't up to much, a poor Irish remake of The Hangover.

But watched 'The Purge' after that and thought it was good for a film that gets one star out of five on movie review websites

wild or whiplash?

apple choices for this weekend, both get good scores on imdb, drawn more to the storyline of Wild but wandering if anyone has seen?
Whiplash - in a heartbeat.

Not just a great film probably the best film I've seen in the last 12 mths.

Put your phone down, lights down, volume up and enjoy.

Ex-Machina First class near future sci-fi. Young IT employee wins the chance to meet the company boss and take part in his secret dablings in AI.
Other than not being long enough .....not sure I can fault it. Great audio/score, great visuals, decent story, beautiful scenery and sets, a twist or two, really well acted, good pace, tense, dramatic, thought provoking.... can't be a 10 though right?
Enjoyed this.

Ex Machina

I enjoyed this film about an experiment to prove whether an AI was really thinking or was just reacting as per its programming. There were a number of very clever considerations, like whether we're likely to forgive a "construct" some imperfections in its programming if it is sexually attractive (She/it was. Very).

The ending fell a little flat but I guess by then the ideas had been properly worked out and the point about the film proven.

8/10

Project Almanac

One of the best time travel films I've seen in ages. Typical of many time travel stories, the group of genius protagonists use their experiment to their own gain until it starts to go wrong. That said, it was nice to see them actually using it for their own gain instead of the film makers concentrating on some higher - unlikely - purpose. No, people want money, fun and sex. This film delivers.

Good ending too.

Focus

Good fun action comedy drama with Will Smith and a very lovely Margot Robbie about con artists.

Lots-a twisty turnies, a bit like a Steven Soderbergh film.

Me too, although it wasn't as good as I'd hoped it would be TBH. A tad predictable and I found the characters rather 1 dimensional but it was very watchable all the same. As above, it looked and sounded gorgeous and was well acted, I just didn't think it brought anything new to the genre that I hadn't seen before in films like Blade Runner, AI etc.

Watched Black Sea last night...

Liked it but I feel it could have been a lot more coherent.

The basic story is good, the problems I have with it are the quite ridiculous moments to push it along.

The driveshaft bit made me laugh, it's a crankshaft with no rods/pistons/etc? and since when can you run a diesel engine when fully submerged?

overall, I'll give it a 6/10

AI fest this weekend.

Ex-Machina as per previous posters summation, very good 8/10

Chappie , inventor of robot police force, steals one to experiment his new AI program on, gets abducted by gangsta' s! I loved it very moving in places. Filmed ala District 9. This was panned by some critics , no idea why? 9/10

Not seen it yet but the main issue seemed to be with the 2 main human characters (Ninja & Yolandi?) being utterly dreadful. I also don't think it was the kind of film people where expecting.

Still looking forward to it personally as now have no expectations.

I agree, the IT guy came across as very naive by wanting to free a machine he met for a few days and I didn't really get his outrage when he seen the footage of the previous models Nathan had created. Personally I didn't make any kind of emotional attachment to her that would make want to save her.

The ending just seemed a bit 'ok lets rap this up'. It was obvious she was going to leave the IT guy but I couldn't really get on board with Ava whispering something you couldn't hear to the other AI which made her decide to stab Nathan, it just seemed a bit of a cop out.

But...it was a beautiful film to just sit and watch and listen to, it definitely had a lot of appeal in that department and I do love a good Sci-fi that can take me away to another place like that.

Chappie for me was as if a Sath Effrikaan teenedge rappa, had watched Ex-Machina and thought they could do better, using the internet to make most of it....so we need some stuff to show that we're connecting to the internet, so lets show a building with a satellite dish, some flashing LEDs and a bank of servers...got it? see, we're connecting to the internet yar!
Having said that I like Blomkamp's style, I just think this one was too childish, the 'message' gets lost, the character's are all OTT...and there are far too many Mk2 and 3 Astra's in 2016 Jo-Berg.
Fun then, but no more....for me. 5.9

yes

One of those films where you get the feeling there's a good 30-45 mins of additional scenes that got left on the cutting room floor during editing that would have really helped to flesh the story out had they been included.

I watched this last night. It's a very good movie. It's creepy, beautifully shot and builds nicely. A solid 8/10 from me.
