Good films I watched this weekend (Vol 2)
Discussion
Predator 2 - a worthy successor to the original. The filmmakers knew that they couldn't recreate the tension of the original since everyone knows who the Predator is and so introduce him straight away and turn it into cat and mouse within the urban jungle. Danny Glover makes a good lead and it never bothered me that he isn't a physical match, since the point of the first one was Arnie got his arse kicked in hand to hand combat. When I was younger I loved the brief shot of the Alien skull and couldn't wait to see what a film with those two would look like. Sigh.................
Ant-Man, brilliant, Rudd is excellent (playing himself) DOuglas and the supporting cast are all very good and fleshed out. One of the better Marvel films and the fights were ace. Had me more involved than most of the other heroes whose comics I had read. Loved the fight at the Avengers base as well.
Terminator:Genysis. Very good, loved the nods to the original. Sits behind that one for me. Very smart and clever and not too saccharine like the second one became, made more sense emotionally.

Hang in, did you just say TG is better than T2?Terminator:Genysis. Very good, loved the nods to the original. Sits behind that one for me. Very smart and clever and not too saccharine like the second one became, made more sense emotionally.

got round to watching Lucy last night...
really rather enjoyable ......some glaring plot/logic holes and could have done with a bit more 'sophistication'?, but very well done, in the way only Luc Besson can.
oh and Min-sik Choi is a properly unhinged baddy!!
7.5/10
I think you're the only person I've met who hasn't absolutely panned it. really rather enjoyable ......some glaring plot/logic holes and could have done with a bit more 'sophistication'?, but very well done, in the way only Luc Besson can.

It was absolutely shocking - Luc Besson is really ruining his name these days.
After writing Leon, Nikita and even the first Taken he's now on a st streak with things like Lucy, 3 Days to Kill and the Taken sequels!

Whiplash
I know it's had a mention before, but if this wasn't my favourite film of the year so far (and I watch a lot...) I wouldn't have bothered mentioning it.
The premise of the film is well known, and that's all you need to know to sit back and take this in. This just works on so many levels. If you love film, the acting is superb, it's beautifully shot, and the sound recording and design is awesome.
If you are into music, then that's great, but it doesn't matter. If you just want a Hollywood flick, this is a much more intelligent version of Top Gun so it's not far off what someone who just enjoys blockbusters expects. It's just a quieter, but more intense, more thought provoking experience.
And that's forgetting for one second that this is written and directed by a 30 year old who did a short and got a couple of million quid funding to make a feature, and shot it in 19 days. You simply would not have guessed it. This is proof that fantastic things can still be done with film once in a blue moon.
I've not seen Birdman yet, but my gut feeling is that the Academy ended up rewarding the 'washed up comedy actor, true to life' because that's the shtick they seem to love over rewarding achievement in film, as this should have won Best Picture on top of the Sound and Editing Oscars it won.
9/10
I've seen both Birdman and Whiplash and I agree Whip is a little better, but then again I'd watch American Sniper over Whiplash any day of the week and that didn't win either. Project X
Teen loser's throw a party; inevitably spirals out of control.
It's no Weird Science (end third) but was surprisingly entertaining with some funny bits, girls in swimming pool & Metallica on the soundtrack.
Showing my age now - when people started talking about Project X recently I though they'd re - released the Mathew Broderick film Teen loser's throw a party; inevitably spirals out of control.

What great auteur hasn't gotten lazy and bloated (and some re-caught their youth too) as their career spans decades though? Maybe Besson will go long enough to get good again.

LOVED Boyhood, one of only 5 films I've ever rated 10/10!
Linklater's 'Tonight Trilogy' is also fantastic, with Sunset being my favourite.
Was a fantastic idea, almost totally wasted.Linklater's 'Tonight Trilogy' is also fantastic, with Sunset being my favourite.
I reckon if I had a potted history of my life from ages 6-18 condensed in to 2 hours it'd be a damn sight more interesting than that & I'm a complete nobody.
Unbroken (2014) with the excellent Jack O'Connell who one a BAFTA for this role (he was also outstanding in Starred Up (2013) and '71 (2014)).
Based on the true story/life of Olympic runner Louis Silvie "Louie" Zamperini (January 26, 1917 – July 2, 2014).
10/10.
Unbroken (and The Railway Man 2013(Colin Firth)) were beautifully filmed and the sense of survival/resistance/redemption/forgiveness in both films made me cry my heart out, especially as they are based on real lives.
Unbroken is very much recommended.
