My wife and I went to see Jurassic World.

It was OK, the effects are fairly decent, but the story's a bit hokey (Catherine Ryan did a bit on Mock the Week where she said "Jurassic World - Who the hell keeps giving us public liability insurance" and the whole premise of an open theme park does seem very unlikely after 1-3!).

To be honest, I thought the acting and plot were about the lovely of a Sci-Fi channel movie, but the effects were better. 6/10

Still, it was free(ish) with Nectar points and we enjoyed ourselves (rounding the evening off with a Nandos and a Superbock! 8/10).

Housebound (2014) Stumbled across this scrolling through the android box. A nice surprise. A low budget NZ film about a bipolar girl under house arrest in a haunted house. Some nice twists. Probably the best film I've watched this year, 8/10

Man of Steel - A bit behind but it popped up on Prime so I thought why not.
It was a close call between this and the other thread for yet another reboot in the superhero genre and they decided to go for the serious/angsty Superman over the less serious Marvel approach. I've always felt superman is a bit silly but it did feel like a more mature Batman like film was trying to escape. It was Ok 5.5/10

Kajaki - brilliant film.

A very good study as to how squaddies think and react to adverse scenarios.
Saw this last night - by no means an easy watch(!), but utterly compelling.

& yes, I was particularly struck by the squaddies sense of humour in the most hopeless of situations.

Top, top blokes. Highly recommended.

American Warships.

A Das Boot for our age. Intricate plot with many twists that you'll never see coming, acting of depth and quality that pays homage to the excellence of the script and the impressive CGI is used sparingly but such is the quality, you barely notice how it adds to the immersion.

Starring Mario Van Peebles no less. Wouldn't expect anything other than riveting cinema at it's very finest.

I'm assuming the IMDB rating of 2.8/10 is down to those pesky North Korean hackers...

Nightcrawler 8/10

ending was a bit disappointing.
Really?

I thought the ending was great, finishing with arguably one of the best car chases in a movie this century and him getting away with.

Seems I've had a week of some pretty hardcore viewing (American Warships not withstanding...)

Started with 'Kajaki' which was full on, and today I watched 'Starred Up'.

Superb - not an easy watch and if you're not comfortable with 'real' violence, give it a miss. First class acting. It's a pure study of the personality, same as 'Kajaki'.

I served with fellas as portrayed in 'Kajaki', I've met fellas as portrayed in 'Starred Up' - I'll treasure my time with the former, I hated my time with the latter. Both could dole out extreme violence, only one group I trusted with my life rather than be worried about it.

Two great films and worth the investment.

Soul Boys Of The Western World - the story of Spandau Ballet

Bloody brilliant! More of a rockumentary, but well worth a watch 8/10

Watched pain and gain on Netflix last night. Very enjoyable but it's unsettling to know it's based on a true story.

Okay, this will divide opinion, but out of curiosity I watched the human centipede - or at least tried to!

Normally quite a fan of odd/weird films, but this one was just crap. No story, very little good acting (aside from the Doctor) and just plenty of bits which didnt make a lot of sense. It seemed that the whole film was the shock value of seeing a human centipede, and tbh I felt sorry for the actors spending an hour, topless, on their hands and knees. Highly doubt that was where they saw their careers going 10 years ago...

3/10.

This is the only relevant thread imo.

I watched Escape Plan and didn't mind it at all, 6.5/10
