This Hannibal is closer to the one I imagined from the novels than Hopkins was - great as that performance was.
I'm wondering if it's because you see the new version Hannibal perform more gruesome acts than the Hopkins version (in Silence of the Lambs, at least)? My memory tells me that a lot of Hopkins' menace was psychological - his gruesome acts were implied or described, but rarely shown?
Gillian Anderson has been confirmed as a series 3 regular. So the two Drs might be going a bit Bonnie & Clyde, or is he flying back to Europe with her, could series 3 be similar to the film Hannibal where he hides out in Florence incognito?
Can't wait whatever it is.
Ps. Gillian Anderson, like a fine wine.

Mads Mikkelsen completely owns the character now. Hopkin's version was good at the time but totally hammy and OTT in comparison, especially in the followup to SotL. Still, entertaining and memorable though and he did make the character super-popular.
Also, it's difficult to believe that Hopkin's Hannibal had the physical prowess needed to be a mass murderer but the strength and brutality of Mikkelsen (albeit hidden beneath a cultured exterior) makes him much more plausible.

The acting is top notch from everyone. Even Eddie Izzard was really good in it.
Have you seen Mads Mikkelsen in Valhalla Rising? It was on TV a month or two back.
It's one weird film. Mikkelsen doesn't have a line of dialogue the entire film, even though he's the central character. Despite that (and the character having only one eye) he still manages to give a powerful performance.

Eddie Izzard has been good in a couple of shows that Ive seen him in now.
I was talking to someone at work about it and I kind of view it as TV as an art form. The way its lit and produced is difficult to describe but there is just so much happening.
Dont get me wrong, I still love shows like Banshee that you can just switch off and watch but I am glad people make shows like this as well

Hannibal is filmed in the Toronto area and I've visited Mason Verger's stables.
They're actually at a huge house called Casa Loma in Toronto where they do a lot of filming. The interiors were used for the Professor Xavier's school in the X-Men movies. It's normally open to the public and well worth a look.
During WW2 the stables were secretly used to make ASDIC (sonar) equipment for the war effort.

Only just caught up, but can I echo "Wow" and "Mads owns him now" from previous posters.
I admit that sometimes it has been sooooooo slow I've fallen asleep; but then again I can't imagine more menace in anything else that's around now - possible exception "Utopia" in a slightly different place.
God! I'm going to miss this while we wait for Italy and S3. The cast is SUPERB top to bottom and the imagination WEIRD!

Mads really has been fantastic in role, supported by an equally superb cast. The cinematography & production is first rate, certainly for a TV show.
I love the way it's remained very dark throughout, no real ease from the unease.
Along with Game of Thrones & True Detective, some of the best TV I've watched in a very long time.
