I can't make up my mind whether this will turn out to be awesome or make the top ten worst films list.

Oh dear! leave it alone please! Hollywood. I love SciFi but all the alien invasion movies of last year were pants and this would just be another one.

Now if they could make a film of the Axis of Time trilogy by John Birmingham that would be great. Just finished all three books and the most enjoyable read I have had in a long time and all thanks to a heads up on here.

It's all about an alternate history WW2 and very clever in it's writing.

Well the original was popcorn nonsense so why not have another big budget sequel or two? It's not as if the original had any serious integrity worth preserving.

I really hope so because the first one was a laughable piece of cliche-ridden ste, so this is bound to be good!

The one thing that would completely ruin it would be be for a Smith Jr to one of the new, younger characters.

It seems Will Smith will only work with his kids nowadays.

I had the misfortune to watch the first one in a cinema in California.
It was the most sereal experience.

People clapping, whooping, cheering, especially when Smith whips ET's arse rolleyes, and then they started walking in the isles clapping.

I've been told that this isn't normal behaviour but I'm not convinced.

I look forward to the next one.

Couldn't agree more. Bit of silly fun always has it's place!

I heard he was not in the sequels because he wanted $50 million, and the studio told him to bugger off.

Don't you find it a little bit, I dunno, annoying, for want of a better word? It just smacks of nepotism. After all, what are the chances that the best actor for the part just happens to be his actual son?

Its stinks of executives cow kowtowing to the main star to the detriment of any artistic integrity they had. Like the previous poster said. What are the chances his son just happened to be the best person for the job?

Because his son cant act, only child actor that was worse was the kid from the Star Wars prequel and the black kid from Tokyo Drift.

Even the Emma Watson in the first Harry potter was better with her over annunciation of every single word.

That'll be me told then...

Fair enough, point taken. Wouldn't put me off the film though.

What makes you think the best person for the job is ever the person who gets the job? The person who gets the job is often the most bankable one that will ensure the studio puts up the money and things.

From the studios point of view I agree.

From my point of view, the right person for the job is someone I can watch for 90 minutes without wishing physical harm upon them.

True enough, but I find I don't currently have especially strong feelings about any child actors. I haven't seen Will Smith's son (Jaden?) in anything, but I heard he was fine in the recent Karate Kid and in the Pursuit Of Happyness. Dunno. I suppose I'm cynical in already thinking that pretty much most studio decisions are made in the light of nepotism and "office politics" and deals and settling for whoever's available. When you read some of the "what if"s about casting choices that never happened, you wonder whether it's even relevant how someone gets the job. Tom Selleck as Indiana Jones, anyone?

I have to admit to Independence Day as being a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. Yes it's incredibly cheesy, overly patriotic (American's save the day) and has more plots holes than Swiss cheese but it had incredible effects for it's time, you get to see the Aliens blow up several US cities\landmarks including the White House, it has some brilliant lines like "Let's Nuke em" and THAT rousing speech given by Bill Pullman as the president so bring on a sequel I say. biggrin

However Smith Jnr needs to stay far far away from this. I've seen Jaden in a couple of films now and have come to the conclusion that he has the acting ability of a plank. I can understand a father trying to give his son a leg up but forcing this dire "talent" on us is just nepotism taken a bit too far. I know a fathers devotion to his son might blind him somewhat but surely even Will Smith must realise that his kid just isn't cut out for this acting lark.
