Independence Day 2
Discussion
Saw it last night - 2/5
After the first I rushed back to watch it the next day.....not doing that this time round!
Goldblum is good, as normal - and that's about it. None of the young "stars" have anything like the X factor Will Smith had. The plot is re-hashed Aliens/Star Wars/etc,etc
The CGI is typical 2016/might as well watch a cartoon.
And the plot is daft - and spends the first 20 mins telling us how we used the alien tech from 1996 to create an Earth that has flying trains and laser guns and hover boards (probably) - except we didn't use the tech from the ONLY intact ship from 1996 because some bloke in the Congo kept that for himself with the help of child soldiers and AK47's I assume???
A far more interesting movie would be the film that took place in the 10 years after 1996 when we are told the aliens who got left here after the first movie put up a bit of a fight......not this nonsense.

Is that really one of the plot points? Lol America have invaded countries for far less, like they'd really leave an alien spaceship to rot in the middle of the jungle.Tiggsy said:

Are you not taking this a little too seriously? I also watched it last night, but I had a very enjoyable couple of brain-dead entertainment. Of course America will save the world again, of course there will be huge holes in the plot, of course some of the acting is just awful, all just like the original which I also enjoyed! After the first I rushed back to watch it the next day.....not doing that this time round!

Go and watch it for what it is, a load of entertaining nonsense.

Just watched it this afternoon, this is how I went in and it's what I got. I only went to kill time and I wouldn't suggest it as an alternative to anything better but it's perfectly fine for what it is.Go and watch it for what it is, a load of entertaining nonsense.
People are playing down the original - the fact this film got made 20 years later is because the original was SO good.
Will Smith was fresh out of Bad Boys and still Fresh Prince to most - you think any of the "stars" from this one will be as big as he became? Some of his lines are still quoted today.
And the FX were ground breaking - White House being blown up is an iconic scence, 20 years on.
The original was superb nonsense - this was not superb in any way at all!

The trailer gives away most of the film, including the big effects.
There is zero chemistry between the male leads. Jessie usher manages the impressive feat of displaying even less charisma than will Smith in after earth.
Star wars had the right idea to mark the rebel and empire laser fire different colours. This was just a mess of dogfights as it was impossible to tell who was shooting at who.
The script manages to be even dumber than a syfy channel special, particularly the closing line.
To be clear, for my sins, I'm a fan of the original, the bayformer films and pacific rim. This was just a lazy rehash that had the potential to be so much better.

I think the biggest difference for me is that in the first one, there was a real sense of fear and peril as the aliens arrived and they then started systemically exterminating humanity city by city.
This time round you really couldn't care less what happens as the aliens can't be arsed to do anything meaningful once they arrive and the countdown is lazily replaced by a crappy depth line display!

Most reviews I have seen of this can sum the film up as being 'Meh...'.

I'm all for brain out popcorn movies but it appears this is just st. I'll give it a swerve.
Watched Independence day 2 this afternoon. It was just about watchable to pass the time on a rainy afternoon. Nothing more. I left feeling like I'd watched the prequel to Starship Troopers, but the. Realised that was unkind... to ST!

Me too, which is why I particularly hate the current film series! The only things I like are Peter Cullen and the desert attack scene in the first film. The rest is dreadful to varying degrees. Give me the original movie any day!Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
