This is going to sound like a gloat but I promise it isn't. smile

Can I ask what it is those of you that have seen it were actually expecting?

I'd made my mind up from seeing a couple of clips that it was going to be pants, and from the reviews on here so far, even from those with low expectations, it's an absolute crock of ste.

I'm just wondering if people saw the previews and thought "it looks ok, I'll enjoy that" or was it more a case of "those clips don't look great but I'll go anyway and hope it's better than that"?

rose tinted specs i think. the first one broke so much new ground and special effects were very clever. I guess i was assuming and expecting another leap in technology or film experience that just didnt happen.

Knew it would be st, watched it, it was st. I knew what I was getting into so overall I was happy enough. It's a bit like going to Macdonalds, you know it's going to be st but you still have one from time to time anyway.

I like both 2012 and pacific rim for brain out entertainment. They know full well that they're following a long long line of disaster movies and creature features. They don't take themselves too seriously and just focus on moving quickly from one set piece to another interspersed with the odd WTF moment (sword?!?!???) before the end game.

You at least take an interest in the plight of the core cast even if some of them are disposable.

2012 even has the mildly pathetic humanity plea towards the end which manages to garner a little sympathy as it's about saving the ordinary workers who put their lives into preserving the future of the human race.

Compare that to resurgence where I really couldn't care less that an entire installation of generic actors is wiped out. A speech slurred out to a crowd of people who looked like they were having their toilet trip interrupted. The final breakthrough literally being " just keep shooting ". It was just completely devoid of emotion and passion.

In fact, I tell you what...

In fact, here's an alternative idea to the "just keep shooting" solution.
We were introduced to those load bearing tugs with arms right at the start and yet after the impressive demonstration of strength, it's then just used as a taxi.

It would have been much more of a fun surprise to deploy a few of those at the end to satisfyingly tear the queen limb from limb.

Finally got around to watching this at the weekend. Yes it's not going to win any Oscars and the first was a bit better mainly due to the newness\wow factor and a more charismatic lead but you know what it wasn't too bad.

The effects were top notch and I wanted\expected 2 hours of aliens, explosions and spaceships which is exactly what I got. Yes the plot was a bit of a mess but I had fun watching the film and so did the OH which is the important part.

Judging by all the negativity they should start a new Film review programme, a lot of people on here would have given Barry Norman a run for his money in the miserable critic stakes.

Saw it on Saturday; I'm glad myself and the wife have Odeon Limitless as I would have been seriously pissed off at blowing £11.95 each on that garbage.

Opening weekend and the screen was only a third full too.
I have Cineworld Unlimited, so was going to go one day this week when nothing else is on.

Will go to gym instead or watching a film on Prime/Netflix/Sky instead - it sounds as st as I was expecting (I am not a big fan of the first, but it was OK brain out fun) so I didn't even want to go for free as it would register another sale in its box office stats

I liked it, in the same way as I liked the first one. It's a brain out film, don't expect more and you won't be disappointed. Are we ok to talk about the big bad without spoilers?

Why did any of you expect anything more? The first film was truly awful made worse by Will King Dick Smith. The second was bound to be worse.

As someone mentioned previously I did find it amusing that there was an alien mothership sat in the middle of the African jungle which apparently belonged to the local tribes. The US have gone to war for far far less so to think they'd leave a fully functioning alien spacecraft in the hands of an African warlord is quiet frankly very very silly. They'd be invading and reclaiming that thing quicker than you can say middle east oil or weapons of mass destruction.

However this is just one of the silly\convenient plot holes so best to leave your brain at home or it will spoil the film.

I would expect this to be pants yet hope to enjoy a few hours of brain out entertainment with my kids yet.......

I loved Captain America, the look, the story etc, I could watch it again and again.

Civil War though was one great big yawn. Over 2 hours of super heroes throwing each other against things that broke until one of them got hurt and the others were all surprised and sorry.

Resurgence can't be as bad as that surely?

Sorry to say it but Civil War is a veritable masterpiece compared to this and that's from someone who actually quite enjoyed ID:R

Have to agree. Civil War had its critics, but overall it holds together quite well.

I also enjoyed ID:R, it doesn't have plot holes - it has plot chasms. And you can see them coming a mile off. Swmbo and I were sat through it guessing which cliche or ridiculous event was going to happen. And I think we nailed every single one of them.

Biggest hole has to be that no Alien species that has managed work out how to cross the vast chasm of space just to get to Earth will be as war mongering or as violent as us biggrin

Just got back from seeing it with one of my sons.

Thanks to you chaps lowering my expectations I actually quite enjoyed it.

Far better than Civil War which I fought to stay awake in and Prometheus which is far less intelligent biggrin
