Independence Day 2
Discussion
I remember watching the original like it was yesterday....I was living in Australia at the time and Independence Day was being screened at the local North Sydney Bears Club.
I remember all the hype...The scene where the Sydney Harbour bridge was ablaze saw the entire audience jump and scream for joy. Pretty much pandemonium!! Bloody nutters.
This time round there were 15 people in the cinema...Silence.

Agree with the above; it is basically a rehash of the original, scaled up but minus the charismatic cheesiness of the first film.
On a positive note, the CGI was good.
Annoyingly, the premise for the film could have actually been very good, but it was poorly executed. It would have been much better if they hadn't tried to clone the first film and instead did something a little different. Potentially have the battle more focused in space, less one sided and more a stalemate etc.
In summary; ID2 is basically Starship Troopers 2, a poor film that tries to emulate its predecessor but misses all of stuff that made the first one magic
- The one-liners were too forced and poorly delivered
- The comic relief was obvious and painful to watch (Brent Spiner served no purpose and wasn't needed, even as a joke character)
- The story transcended fun trash and came across as boring and poorly thought out
- The young lead actors were crap and seemed to base their character development on the Redwood tree
- The pacing ws miles off and things were dragged out for no particular reason.

Should have realised it was going to be a stinker when I sat down with 5 other people in the whole cinema...
And boy is this a stinker. Take effects from 2012, take half the storyline from ID4, remove most of the charismatic actors, get remaining actors to phone performances in, make everything BIGGER and LOUDER and MORE STUPID.
It's not even so bad it's good. It's just bad. And, bizarrely given the amount of destruction, boring as hell.

Personally, I liked it. Not a patch on the original, but still good. I did think it was very crowded on screen (how many characters can you stuff into one film?!) and the story did jump from one sub-plot to the next, however enjoyable nonetheless.
Although I didn't like the 'sci-fi-ness' of it (bare with me). The first film was kind of feasible, in a cheesy, squint and you'll see it kind of way, whereas this was just full on sci-fi make believe. Kind of hard to put it in words (I fully appreciate the irony of calling a sci-fi movie too sci-fi) but it was a bit OTT and lost some of the realism I guess. Maybe it was the fact that the world had rebuilt itself, reverse engineered extremely advanced alien tech, incorporated said alien tech into terrestrial technology, made all of this technology widespread and built a moon base all in 20 years. I don't know, maybe I'm a cynic.
Waited 20 years for this one, hopefully ID4:3 doesn't take so long.

2/10 from me, didn't even meet my low expectations and was amazingly devoid of fun considering it appears to have been dumbed down for kids. It felt like the actors were talking to green screen characters that weren't there even when they were talking to each other and if the plot to the original was painting by numbers, this was a dot-to-dot. Dragging the Prez out to say some random speech that noone looked like they needed.
Hollywood continually surprises me in its ability to turn box office gold into crap.

Saw trailers for it at the weekend. I don't think I'll bother paying to see it, tbh.
Download for free at some point....
It's not even that good. Watch it in a few years when it's on freeview and there's nothing else on. Going to the cinema is increasingly not a cheap thing to do, so I find myself resenting it when it's obvious the film makers didn't even try.Download for free at some point....
