personally I dont get the comments about the "brilliant writing" it all seems rather lazy and mostly predictable to me.
Capaldi as Dr who just feels totally out of place, not his fault , but definatley the fault of the writers.
Just my opinion, and many will obviously disagree.

That was much better.

As back handed compliments go, "you're a good dalek" is a cracker. All the best Who deals with his demons, that might be the thing they're going to do with Capaldi.
One of the homicidal pepperpots told Ecclestone's doctor that he "would make a good dalek". I don't think that was a compliment either.

And, are they hinting that the Doctor has something to do with the origin of the Daleks?

I think the writers are interested in the conflict between his principles and his genocidal attitude to daleks.

Tom Baker was there - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genesis_of_the_Daleks

True, but BakerDoctor only allowed them into existence by his refusal to commit genocide. I was thinking of a darker undercurrent - that the Daleks are somehow modelled on some aspect of the Doctor, or possess some of his DNA.

The Daleks were originally a separate race, put into pepperpots by Davros. If they had Doctor DNA then they could possibly regenerate, like the Doctor's daughter who was "cloned" from his blood. Probably setting up that Capaldi's Doctor is a lot more badass!

A piece of trivia - the 1st Doctor once said "If I say 'Stetsons are cool' ever again' well, just feel free to shoot it off my head" then nearly 50 years later the 11th Doctor's Stetson is shot off his head after he said "I wear Stetsons now. Stetsons are cool"

I get the feeling that the writers realised that Matt Smith may be big on charisma, but doesn't have the experience or acting range for the job, and so gradually moved the acting load onto the companion and, in later episodes, onto River Song. Now they have a more experienced actor in the role, I'm beginning to feel them pulling the story back to The Doctor. Mr Capaldi's Dr certainly feels more complex and deeper than Matt Smith's. I'm looking forward to see what he does with it.

Well, he happily doses the 'red shirt' guy with a radioactive tracer, knowing he's about to be toast.

Rather than pulling it back to the doctor, I think they've just created a chasm between him and Clara; there's no connection between them at all so far. As for Matt Smith's acting range, well I don't agree but let's see how he gets on in future roles, hasn't he done something with Ryan Gosling recently?
I agree with that too. It is like a token that Clara is involved with the Doctor so far, there is just no connection.

Cole Hill school and a renegade/rebel dalek; very Remembrance of the Daleks...

But I guess you all spotted that... wink

Although Coal Hill school does feature throughout Dr Who, so could just be a coincidence.

I turned to my wife and son and said "That's the best episode of Dr Who I've seen in years" when this week's finished.

Lots of action, some nice dark humour ("Yes, she's my carer. She cares so I don't have to") from the Doctor and, of course, a homicidal Dalek. (I guess we've forgotten that they were all wiped out in the Time Wars? And were these 'old spec' Daleks? Seemed less "Audi" than the ones in recent series).

After a shaky start, I think Capaldi's going to make a great Doctor, although I should really be FAR too old to care smile

The time war never happened. I think anyway.

I liked the episode. Like inner space but with Daleks. good work.

Wibbley-wobbley, Timey wimey. The Time War happened and the vast majority of Daleks were destroyed. However a few survived and those remnants keep popping up. The last major skirmish was when the "Human" Doctor killed those in the Medusa Cascade using the "Reality Bomb" Davros had built. Since then in the "Victory of the Daleks" they basically re created themselves leading to the current situation.

I think I read someplace that the new look Daleks weren't well received and have quietly been shelved after a few appearances. Hence the old style ones are used now.

The GIANT Hasbro Toy Daleks? Only made the one appearance in the pretty awful Victory of the Daleks before they were quietly forgotten didn't they?

Movie plots alluded to - Legend and Terminator 2, Monty Python & The Holy Grail (the minstrel). The actor who played Robin Hood, played the part well IMHO.

Best episode so far.
