Odd how her phone's screen is still on when she's got it to her ear. Looks like an iPhone, they still turn off don't they?

I think the stories are really st these days, and it's only Capaldi's amazing performances that are holding it together.

(And the delectable Clara of course. I'll have no reason to watch it at all when she leaves.)
I do find there's a lot of pseudo cleverness and bad attempts to brush of things off that don't make sense or hang together in ways that try to seem clever when they just aren't. It's a bit like watching an episode for it to end with the line, "And it was all just a dream."

Isn't usually willing to create paradoxes, explains what one is directly to the camera, does it anyway.

His guitar skills are a bit of a let down, not so much an axe battle, more a mangle.

He could have at least rattled off Blackmore's solo from Child in Time.

In his defence, he's better than where B&TT started and look where they ended up:

I enjoyed it, actually though it was quite clever in places without being overly demanding.

7/10.

I think they need Slipknot to do the title theme. It would be rather lively. He must have been in geek heaven doing those vocals.

It was far from the first ontological paradox in Dr Who (see also, Blink), unusual for any time travel story to acknowledge it though.

Yes, but Blink was a brilliant, classic episode, the like of which there has not been since.

And it had Sally Sparrow in it.

This thread reminded me about it so I watched it again tonight. Bloody brilliant and stands up on its own.

Stories like Blink and 'The Empty Child' ("Are you my mummy?") show how good a writer Steven Moffat is. Perhaps Dr Who would benefit from letting someone else be the 'show runner', allowing him to concentrate solely on writing

Perhaps being the show runner is allowing him too much freedom in his writing - no-one to tell him no when he comes up with a crap idea

Yes, there are other examples of him not practicing what he preaches, but not usually so explicitly and with prior exposition to camera.

Has the Doctor ever done 4th wall talking to camera before? (not including the recorded 'DVD extras' they played in Blink)

Not that I can recall.
However...
A while ago I re-watched the episode where Clara Oswald first appeared (the girl who was unaware that she was actually a Dalek). Her final line was "Run, you clever boy, and remember". She turned her eyes directly to camera for the last two words. It's only obvious in hindsight, but that was 4th wall 'wink' to the audience.

William Hartnell wished "and a Merry Christmas to all of you at home" at the end of The Dalek's Master Plan. This is one of the missing serials but the audio exists.
