Yes, getting as much 'representation' in as possible is so much more important than telling good stories. It's really what the show is all about biggrin

This is exactly why woke media is going down the pan and costing companies like Disney(who ironically bought into Doctor Who recently) , hundreds of millions of dollars from failed movie projects.

The bad news is that since the BBC doesn't have to worry about making money through producing commerically popular programmes, they can keep plopping out woke turds. The good news is that increasingly large amounts of people are fed up with the insertion of agenda into everything the BBC produce these days that they are dropping the license in droves and the BBC is seeing its funding dry up that way.

It's just sad that since anything new with a woke angle just won't fly, they have to resort to taking once-beloved shows/properties and subverting them. Time was I'd be excited when I saw that an old show, book, comic or film was getting a new modern version but now I just dread what is going to be done with it.
Is this what right wing virtue signalling looks like? Woke this, woke that and woke the other. If you want prime "woke" left wing Dr Who go back to the 80's when the writers have proudly admitted their scripts were explicetly anti Thatcherite.
He's one of those who uses the word "woke" like a 7 year old who just discovered the word "fk".

I think it's more a case of Disney milking it than any wokey woke stuff

Just got round to watching the Toymaster one and I thought it was proper Who. Super writing.
Come on...those little dolls attacking Donna? You would have been scared by that back as kids.

Im looking forward to seeing what the gay Eddie Murphy can do with the Doc. He has a bit of style about him, so he should be able to make it work, esp if the writing is decent.

So why not use the man's name rather than mention his sexuality and colour?

Because his entire appearance screamed Eddie Murphy.
I thought that was obvious from my use of, say...Eddie Murphy? IF I had meant a random gay black guy Id have have said something about a random gay black guy. NOT the explicit and obvious use of the bloke he is a spitting image of.

And I think it fair to say that the single biggest talking pt about the bloke is his sexuality. Now then, given that I happened to think the episode was rather good, superbly well written and that the new chap looks to bring an interesting style and a bit of flair to the role - how about you focus on the positives? Not try to find negatives.

The new guy deserves his chance.
Funnily enough my 13 year old got into Doctor Who via DVDs and recordings we have. Her older sister was/is a big fan.
Both enjoyed the recent David Tennant trilogy.
She has blasted through Matt Smiths and is now looking at his last story.
I got to say it holds up very well

That was more like the thing. I really enjoyed that episode and no woke nonsense that I could see. This bodes well for the new run starting in May.

I enjoyed it, though it was what appears to be the standard breathless pacing. Let's hope they slow it down. I liked the new doctor, new companion was OK. Story was daft, but it is a Christmas special.

That was great fun! I figured the Gremlins / Jabba similarities were all very knowing, and just added to the playfulness of the episode. Really great energy and another cool reinvention of the Doctor - that's what should be all about, after all. Looking forward to the next series, the future is in safe hands!

Well I'll have go against the grain here... I thought it was utterly awful.

Ncuti and the rest of the cast were great, but the story felt like it was written by an 8 year old.

Just nipping back in time to fix the problem is just lazy... He could do that in every episode but doesn't.

And the fact he murdered the goblin king was totally out of character, given how much he hates killing.

The whole ending just felt rushed.

It's a shame as I liked Ncuti as the doctor.

I agree with that.
It felt like the story was written for a much younger audience than usual. Maybe it was just because it was the Christmas special.

I'll give it 6½ out of 10. Could, and hopefully will, do better.

It's just not Who. It's Disney Who. Far too much background music. Cinematic direction. Musical number. Overly simplistic plot with dubious morals. The killing of the king and goblins just didn't feel justified in the context of the episode to me.

The only thing BBC about it was the crowbarred social commentary (trans singer friend, mixed race foster home, etc.).

I thought it was awful as an episode and simply not Who in terms of production and content.

Yes, it was a Christmas one and they're usually daft but they're also usually full of awe, celeb cameos and the Dr being the Dr (charismatic know it all); where was any of that? His explanation of the threat? "Goblins". Not "alien species x from planet y who love to cause chaos and steal babies, you know them as.... "goblins"'. No clever twist of what we call goblins. And they did absolutely nothing with the plot point about them causing chaos, which is a gremlin, not a goblin.

I think the BBC played a shrewd one to get the cash but 'traditional' Dr Who is done for now. At least, in my opinion wink

Mrs is a Dr Who fanatic, after about 20 minutes last night she switched over to some music channel and went and done the dishes,
said it was dire and reckons most of her SM friends are saying the same.

I tried watching it after hearing some of the furor and.... I thought it was very poor.. The positive? Eddie Murphy was actually quite engaging with suitably eccentric dress sense; the goblins were (sort of) fun... other than that though hurl poorly written; very 'on-message'; Anita Dobson; Davina McCall; time-travel bks; new companion...

A missed opportunity in my opinion.

The Goblins could have been much more menacing and expanded into a much more sinister villain.

WTF ! At one point I thought I was watching Dr Who the musical.

The shoehorning of the PC boxes was more subtle but still the boxes were ticked.

If the Dr had gone back in time to then Ruby was left at the church, why didn't he find out who the mother was?
I assume it will be a few episodes in tot he new series before we are told that it's Anita Dobson?

Killing Jabba was out of character for the Dr.

Can we PLEASE stop with all the running around business?

I guess we will be able to form a better opinion in May 24
