Series 1 was very good, and the best ITV drama in years. Series 2 is awful and it's down to the dreadful shallow depth of field camerawork/digital blurring of a huge amount of each episode. It seems that blurred images are very important to the director but it's ruined it for me. It's incredibly bad.
Even the Mail noticed that the legal/courtroom stuff was utter nonsense, starting with the victim's family and the local paper choosing the prosecuting counsel.

The court scenes are bloody ridiculous though, I know squat about law and even I know that! Why is the defending woman allowed to get away with being such an offensive little cow?!
This is what's winding me up, too. She's a nasty old bag and I find myself hoping something horrible befalls her. Beth's attitude towards Ellie is really annoying, too - I can kind of understand why she'd be angry with her, but the constant temper-losing and chucking toys out of pram is a bit wearing.I agree with the comment on shallow depth of field, too - there was a close-up of someone's face, with an eye in the centre of the screen. Okay. But then the other eye was out of focus, which completely distracted me and I had to wind back to hear what they'd said.
So no, I don't think this is as good as the first series. There are just too many coincidences, contrived meetings/situations and annoying characters. (It's a shame that obnoxious defence brief and the Welsh bint with the attitude and the strange husband will have to make it to the end of the series, really.) But it's still enjoyable, albeit in a different way. Tennant and Coleman are great, as always, and the scenery is fab.
So Beth walks back into court hours after having a baby which she leaves in the care of her young teenage daughter. Is this what life is like outside the M25?
Its all watchable but completely rubbish compared to the 1st series which I only saw over a weekend about a month ago. That one was brilliant.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuu. I knew that was going to happen but I was so mad at the end of ep7.
Agreed. Pain in the bum. I reckon Lee Ashworth is living in France with the missing girl, who isn't dead, and Claire and Ricky Gillespie were having an affair and Pippa found out so they killed her, quite possibly with that pendant they keep going on about. Joe will be found guilty and, since we're into contriving scenarios in this series, he'll be killed in prison by the son of his obnoxious defence brief. Or else he'll kill the son of his obnoxious defence brief, I don't mind which.
And having said that, that pretty much guarantees that none of this will happen.
