The big fella has worked 23 years before being made redundant in a relatively poor area of the country. That's longer than my entire working life (and I'll bet many other here too), and I've never been on the dole. 2 of the kids are his. Yes there's a large clan already but he can't be responsible for his partner's past. In fact, fair play to him for taking them on. He's no more brash than many of the site guys I work with, for whom cock-and-ball based japes are fairly routine. I know ground workers who would make him look like Mary Poppins. He may smoke and drink, but he's far from the PH benefit fraud stereotype, where there's a Vito on motability and hundreds of pounds of DLA and excuses about being dyslexic or some st. OK he could do more, but he could also do a lot less. His honesty about his situation spoke loads - sadly, as did his lack of humility about some aspects. The 12 year old daughter looked like she had some sense of self-respect too. I think, image aside, they're a fairly decent, together family in difficult circumstances, and but for one or two decisions, I may well have ended up on that path. I'd certainly rely on benefits - at least in the short term - if I lost my job.

Money to spend on fortune tellers...
That fortune teller was uncanny in her accuracy."You've got a baby"
I mean, who could have guessed it. The fortune teller could have just as easily said "You've just finished your OU degree in Applied Economics and your about to take up a post in Goldman Sachs Manhattan office" and she would have been completely wide of the mark. But she didn't. She said she had a baby.
And to think, people say fortune telling is a load of old tosh!!

Not only that, but the bird said she'd seen the fortune teller before, probably when she had a fking great pregnancy belly on her!
What...you mean the palm reader couldn't actually see into the future??? That's sharp practice surely! ezi said:

That's the impression I came away with as well. Before being judgemental, I would wager that the majority of people on that estate are essentially decent and law abiding and simply trying to make ends meet. Can any of us say for certain that, when faced with a similar situation, they wouldn't accept a bit of 'hooky' if it came their way and it saved a few quid? Britain's best loved comedy sitcom was based around the same premise - and the public loved Del Boy and Rodney. How do you solve a problem like Connor?
As it stands, you cant. My GF works for the police and deals with 'Connors' every day. Unfortunately, the fall back of nuking from orbit is not really an option. Unless there is a massive change in government policy across a number of key areas the status quo will remain unchanged and the problem will only get worse.
An education gives you the ability to use language, and that language gives you the ability to articulate your feelings.
An inability to articulate means the only resort is violence, throwing stuff, swearing, generally being a , and acting like a five year old (who has good reason to be inarticulate).
Connor holds the key to solving his problems, but he won't go to school. Why? Because he's frightened.
fking tough nut, my arse!

To link in with the only fools and horses reference above I thought 'Dean' was an utter plonker...
None too happy when the step daughter was caught shop lifting but then what message has he given to her openly buying from the local scag head?
Speaking of which, what a sad an utterly hopeless character. She can't have been much more than early 20's looking past the drug addled appearance and her life was effectively over.
Going back to the step daughter, I really felt for her when she was talking about her absent father; I feel a huge factor in the decline of these kids into the scrotes we all love to hate is the promiscuous habits of their 'parents' leaving a trail of half loved kids in their wake.
So that brings me back to Dean, some here say he seems a decent guy, I'd disagree. He is a hot headed moron with a highly questionable set of morals dragging a brood of semi-feral kids up into a hopeless adulthood - did you see his attitude towards the girl being on report? Supportive, concerned parent? Pah, his idea is of good parenting is making sure they have something to eat and hair gel.

I really fancy a new DB9. I can't quite afford one so ill buy one that's been stolen then. Doesn't matter about the other guy who has lost out, as long as I get what I want There is no excuse for buying/handling stolen goods. If they stopped buying it, people would stop stealing it. You make it sound like its acceptable for the shops to have to restock items for free because of people who can't quite afford their prices. Utter scrotes the lot of them.
Thing is, what are they going to do?
Seriously, who will employ them and who will set up business in Shorpe in order to do so?
Yes, so they could get an education, help themselves etc, but why do I get the idea that the attitudes and types of people flagged up last night weren't a problem in Shorpe when they still had the steelworks.
This is what you end up with when you take a highly-populated industrial economy and attempt to turn it into Switzerland.

Yes, but it's not as if the town was a happy go lucky haven of opportunity last year though, is it? The steel works and their decline have been going on for years. At some point you need to take ownership and do something about it and after c. 20 years my sympathies are wearing thin.Seriously, who will employ them and who will set up business in Shorpe in order to do so?

Nevertheless they exist in that state. They may be feckless wasters (they are btw) with shocking attitudes (they are btw) but they're society's problem. We see cowardly councils everywhere hide bound & controlled from London dumping people on sink estates & using the Police to corral them in one place. Then we complain when they turn out to be generationally hopeless feral wkers. No easy answers & let's face it, nuking them from orbit is probably ruled out in austerity Britain.

What's the alternative? Keep the heavy industry and attempt to turn the UK into China?Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
