Blackadder is a work of genius, and easily the best comedy series of all time.

My order of preference is :

2 is the funniest.

3 is the cleverest.

4 is the most thought-provoking and poignant.

2 and 3 are awesome. I actually think 3 takes it for me, as others have said, Hugh Laurie is hilarious.

I think I might be the only person who actually likes Blackadder I.

Think they're all superb - and closely matched. (Probably 4123 for me but that can change).

'The Queen Of Spain's Beard' is another good one. "Help! In 24 hours I'm going to be married to a walrus." Brian Blessed is good value too.
Jim Broadbent steals the show as the Spanish translator hehe

2, no 3, no 2!

I never warmed to 4 and 1 was just odd.

I was going to vote for the Xmas special, but the warmth and depth of 4 pipped it at the post.
A world weary and 1/10th good Blackie beats all the others hands down.

Second is the second, third is the third, and last is the 1st, but by no means awful, loved it when it first came out, still lover it, it was epic. And Peter Cook and Brian Blessed were awesome.

2341 for me. I enjoy all of them though, but I thought Blackadder was funniest when he was a sneering cynic with some degree of authority, as opposed to a sneering underling to a degree in the first series.

What in the name of Bonapartes balls..?!! laugh

3241 for me. I haven't seen many of 1; it's never really made me laugh. I always find the canned laughter on 4 very distracting too. Were the others filmed in front of an audience?

Fry was excellent in 3 & 4!

Difficult! I have favourites from each of II, III and IV, but all for different reasons. I think series two sees Blackadder at his malevolent best, but three and four have Fry and Laurie on peak form. Rik Mayall's first appearance as Flashheart is also up there in my all time greatest comedy moments. He probably has better lines when he reappears in Goes Fourth, but I just love how utterly over the top he is in series two.

3 - 2 -1 -4

3 because lines like 'thick as a whale omlette' 'hung like a baby carrot' (fine turn from Chris Barrie)and 'fitting wheels to a tomato, time consuming and unnecessary' just stay with me forever.

2 because of Bob, Flash Heart and the comedy boobs

1 was uneven but the final episode torture machine with the tickling feather gets me every time

4 last because I felt it ran out of genuine comedic ideas

+1

Was going to say the same.

Remember a documentary with I think Richard Curtis, where he said that JB managed to get the emphasis completely counter intuitive and how well it worked.

My favourite line from series two is when Blackadder is being threatened with torture by someone who only speaks Spanish, who is trying to describe with sign language what agricultural implement he will use to castrate Blackadder.

When he finally emerges carrying it, Blackadder goes "Oh it's a scythe!"

For some reason it gets me every time.

I'd normally go 2-3-4-1, but on reflection I could be persuaded to go 3-2-4-1.

"Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?"
