US cars and trucks are very popular sur le continent.

Check out Ford Crown Victorias on Dutch eBay. Always a few yet as hen's teeth on the UK version.

The Americentric components may have been part of the original plan with a view to selling the show to US networks.
Could you EVER sell a sub-titled program to the US networks???
No clue, I was thinking more along the lines of selling the story/screenplay to them. Of course thinking more about it, props wouldn't be integral to the story and could easily be changed to suit the target market.

It was just a thought I had, clearly wasn't a very good one. smile

I haven't done any driving on the continent, but the roads don't appear to be as narrow or congested as many UK roads and that is the main issue I have with driving US trucks over here. I do like them very much, owned one for years when I lived in the US, but they would just be too big for many of the UK roads I find myself on.

In rural France (or maybe even the UK) in a similar setting to the location of the show, they would be perfect.

This series is definitely getting more bizarre. I've got a feeling I'm going to be disappointed, but it is still some of the best TV I've seen in a long time.

Some observations from last night's episode: -

- Is Adele a Rev? This was suggested but I'm not convinced. Same with Julie as she has scars.

- How did Lena get away from the mysterious group, they saw her so why let her go?

- Mdm Costa dying 3 times? I thought there might be something more behind her starving to death when the damn broke in the past.

- The scene in the storage shed at the Helping Hand was properly creepy, I was half expecting them to be alive, but trapped in the ropes.

Trying to get my head around the geography, is the new town down the valley from the lake and dam? If the dam broke I assume this town would be flooded which has apparently happened before. What is the significance of the old town that was beneath the lake and is now emerging?

Hope there is a decent conclusion next week although they will obviously leave lots unanswered for series 2.

Excellent episode!

Possible (but not probable) scenario?:

...so it appears that they can't leave the town and if they try to they just come back on themselves. Wonder if this is some kinda purgatory thing where everyone is actually dead.

ETA: I'm taking the spoiler tags off as nobody seems to care.

The Dam has already burst and everyone is already dead? My theory.

It's a hell of a quiet town, very few people about but they have a huge police presence, it would be the police left in the town getting people evacuated when it bursts, those left in the town at that point are those we see joined by other dead.

I'm sure there's a "but" coming, but that's my thought.

Ps, I did also think it was Victor stopping Julie and Laure from leaving.

My theory is more or less like the above, the 'not being able to leave town' bit clinched it.

Is anyone else liking the Mogwai incidental music as much as I am? Though the little piano refrain is a carbon copy of a Portishead track...

I've bought the soundtrack, arrived today so will listen to tonight.

I don't think there's any great significance other than it serves the story by accounting for a number of the dead in the flood. I know no one really cares about this, but the geography is the same in real life. The village under the water is the original Tignes & the power station actually is down the valley in Tignes Les Brevieres, as I suppose a hydro electric power station would be.

If anyone is ever that way, there's a decent ice racing circuit next to the power station that is a hoot.

Just watched it, agree with the above about the pergatory thing and not getting out. The returned are dying/zombifying (Victors arm, Simons stomach, Camilles cheek) if the crowd of them from the woods are the same, they're coming out of hiding. It's a great series, as there's a second series (please get it Channel 4) it's not going to be a neat ending next week. So the many hanging questions aren't all going to be answered. Can't wait biggrin .

I'm not sure where Lena's big back wound fits in to this theory, but I think we're on the right track.

Oh, and according to the soundtrack CD I just bought, the series is based on a film of a different name.

I actually found that really interesting and have just had a mooch round on Google Maps. I've been to Val D'Isere so I'm sure we passed through or near Tignes, it really is stunning round there, yet they seem to make it appear very bleak in The Returned.

Maybe she is dead too.
Her dad hit her once. She may have died and come back straight away

I'm up to episode 4 so far. Is it worth sticking with? I'm beginning to lose interest.

I became hooked on this during the promising first episode, now I am hoping that it doesn't end without a conclusion like fifty percent of French films.

Each time this happens I promise myself I won't watch another French film, ever, yet I always get sucked in again.

This is still preferable to Hollywood endings where you know everything is going to be tied up neatly with the hero safe and sound.
